I hate to ask again so soon......... :-[
But the friendship and assistance I received from my first post makes me think you won't mind.
My Grandfather married Elizabeth Tanton in Ilfracombe October 1891,
Her place of birth was listed as Torrington, and her father was Thomas a gamekeeper. She was 21 years old.
I have found several Tantons, and printed out a 1871 census that looked a possibility, but seem to be stuck, as that Thomas appears not to have had children.
Has anyone been doing a similar search I wonder? ::)
Best wishes to all
Mike

Hi Mike,
You wouldn't have the name of Elizabeth's mother would you please?
Kindest regards,

Hi Pels,
All I have to go on are the two witnesses at the ceremony, Richard Greek?? whom I believe was Richard Crech, shown as head of the household in which Elizabeth was living in the 1891 census, and Florence Tanton, who could have been her mother but nothing to that effect was recorded.
Also in the household was Mary Ann Crech, wife of Richard, and Elizabeth Tanton was shown as sister-in-law, so am I right in thinking that Mary Ann would have been nee Tanton? Mary Ann was 29 years old (1891)
Thank you for taking an interest.
Kindest regards
Mike

Elizabeth Tanton, sister in law, unm. 21, General Servant Dom. b. Torrington, Devon

Hope you don't mind - it is easier to work backwards!

Sorry Mike I had it done before I read your post!! ::)
I will carry on!! :) :)

Hi Pels,
You have helped already, Creek is much more likely to have been the name than Crech (or Greek). ;D
I went to school in Ilfracombe with a fellow named Creek. My 'Crech' was from find my past.com.
As for working backwards, that is all I seem to have been doing on this one.
Thank you.

Having one of my blonde moments(And yes i can say that i am blonde) just realised what it said on census ditto to the above .So Thomas was born in St Giles in The Wood ,Devon.
So Florence her sister was a witness to Elizabeths marriage.

The strange thing as far as I can see is the father of Mary Ann and Elizabeth appears to be Samuel and their mother is Elizabeth?
I have found Florence with her parents Thomas and Betsy.
The next thing is to try and fit Thomas, Mary Ann, Elizabeth and Florence together, missing Samuel out of the equation!!
I really can see why you are puzzled Mike?
Pels :)
Welsh lady - Sorry, I've been sat here for ages and didn't realize anyone else had posted. ;D The only problem is finding this Thomas in 1861 when Elizabeth was a baby .. ..
-
Thank you Blonde Welsh Lady, ;D
How you do it baffles me.
A lady who turned out to be my second cousin 'found' me through Genes Reunited and she had already done an awful lot on the main lines of the family so I am trying to help to fill in the gaps so to speak.
Thank you so much
Kindest regards
Mike.

I've exonerated myself!! This is why I was temporarily thrown - the above is a typing error - it should read 1871!!

Hiya both Grun we are now both on track. The 1881 entry seems to be correct all info fits. However i cant find them in 1871.Another problem seems to be looking around the other censuses i can find at least 3 Thomas Tanton born around the same time in St Giles The Wood.I think our family has been mistranscribed in 1871 will keep on looking.

Pels, Welsh Lady,
Just a big thank you for looking so hard on my behalf.
I am at the age where I only have the occasional JUNIOR moment,
and have never done anything like this before.
Do please let me know if you turn up anything else.
I am sure I will be needing further help from this forum before too long.
My grateful thanks to you both. Time to eat.
Kindest regards

Pels,
Again my thanks, what is it that makes you continue the search, and where do you look?
For me it is like a 'who dunnit'. My problem as a novice is learning the ropes, so to speak.
Believe me every bit of todays info is safely tucked away on my hardrive, backed up, copied onto an external drive and backed up on there too.
I have been doing searches for a cousin, now in Australia, who shares my mums side of my tree, and have done quite well, but finding this forum has helped so much, that I wish I had found it sooner.
I have always felt that I would be a nuisance in asking for help, but here it is so freely given, that I don't feel so bad about it.
Many, many thanks.
If I can help you in anyway, you only have to ask.
Kindest regards.
Mike
