Hi again everyone.
I know i've just had help with one branch of my family, and i feel a bit cheeky, but can i ask you to help again?
This is my dads side of the family, mt great, great, granddad. His name was John Joseph Farrar, and he was born about 1841. i have him in all the census up till 1891 (he died in 1893), and according to all the census, he was born in Tanfield, Durham, but i can't find him anywhere.
According to his marriage certificate, his father was James farrar, but this is all i know, and as i can't find a birth for him, i can't order a certificate to find out who his mother was!! I need to know more about this man. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!!!!
Thing is, i'm finding his wife difficult to trace aswell, maybe more so than John, as her father isn't named on the marriage certificate, but his occupation is recorded as collier. Her name was Mary Frost, and i've found two of them in Tanfield durham, but don't know how i can be sure which is mine. She was born about 1845 and her and John married at st. Margarets, Tanfield, on the 13 Sep 1863.
I know its a big ask, but i'd love a bit of help... Thanks people. Love to you all!!

Hi again geordiegal
You say you've found James Farrar in all the census's - does this include 1841 and/or 1851? Who is he living with at the time of these census's?
JULIAN
-
hello again Julian. No its not James i've got in the census.. its his son John and when i've looked again, its not him either!!! i've only got him in 1881 and 1891, but hes living with his wife and children. Don't suppose that helps, does it?

I cam give better news on Mary Frost, although the 1861 Census gives three possibilities,I noted that she had no middle name in later Census years, and the 1861 Census shows a Mary Frost born in c 1846,the daughter of a Robert Frost given as a Widower born in Tanfield in c 1815.

Thanks Russell. Do you think this is my Mary then?
If you don't mind, can i ask how you arrived at that? I'm just asking cos i'm pretty new at this, i guess, if i ask more experianced researchers i might learn something. Thanks again.

No, not necessarily. Clerical errors occurred back in the 1860s too. Let's see where we get to next. The Davenport bit is interesting - wonder if he was his or hers stepfather (bearing in mind the terminology wasn't necessarily exact in those days).
(and yes I enjoyed my nosh - a couple oven-baked potatoes with loads of cheese!)

Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm hitting a brick wall on 1851 census for John Farrar.
I found the 1861 entry by searching on "John Farr*".
For 1851 the best I can do, (and I'm not at all comfortable about this) is the following family unit in Ludworth/Shadford:
Mary Farrow Head Widow 36 Miner's Widow B Kenburn (?) Northumberland
Isabel Farrow Daughter 8 B Haswell, Durham
John Joseph Farrow Son 6 B Haswell Durham
Thomas Gordon Visitor 63 Coal Miner B Alnwick, Northumberland
HO107/2391, 502/6
And heres Mary Frost with her mother and Grandparents in 1851
But welsh lady is doing you well up the other line. :)

Well I've got something - but doesn't match with the info from John's marriage certificate
1841 census: Salters Lane, Haswell, Durham (Easington Reg District)
Joseph Farrow 26 Coal Miner (born in county)
mary Farrow 26 (not born in county)
John Farrow 5 months (born in county)

I have the baptisms of the Frost daughters from Tanfield if you want the dates. Also Joshua's marriage to Dorothy Stevenson in Tanfield 27 Feb 1816. I suspect he was married to a Mary before this as there is a child Robert bapt 1814 to a Joshua and Mary[nee Harrison] Frost. Mary Frost, age 33, was buried in 1814. The residence was Barcus Close.
Dorothy Stephenson bapt 21 Nov 1790, Fellside, d/o Thomas and Isabel Stephenson Whickham St. Mary

Joshua Frost was originally from Medomsley, was a hind.

Hi Janis, and thanks for all this help. I'd love to have those baptism dates too, if you don't mind passing them on. Thanks again.

I have had a go at finding Mary Farrow (in replies #12 and #13) in the 1861 census. No such luck, unfortunately. Couldn't find Isabell either. I was hoping to find something that would rule her out or in to your chap John Joseph Farrar.
JULIAN

Oh well, thanks anyway Julian, your help has been fantastic, and i have so many lines of family i'm stuck with in Durham, i need all the help i can get!!

Hello to all - this is my first post!
Found this thread by searching - I'm helping my father-in-law with his Farrar tree. Did this thread just fizzle out, or was some progress made with John Farrar? I found the "Farron" entry for the 1871 census (I've made the correction in Ancestry), and was puzzled by the "St Helens" birthplace. But, it turns out to be true! I've found the Farrar family in the 1851 census in Eccleston, St Helens, Lancashire. The key is that James Farrar is recorded as a Copper Smelter, the same occupation as he has on John and Mary's marriage certificate.
If anyone out there is still persuing this line, please respond.
Best wishes

hi there Howard, it was good to get another reply to this post after so long.. i,m still looking for John Joseph Farrar, and unfortunatly haven't gotten much further than i had before!! John Joseph is my great great grandad so i'd really love to know more. i do now have a few more dates etc. from the records office concerning his wife Mary Frost, but as i say, John is still a mystery, i would love just one tiny breakthrough!! I'd love to stay in touch though as i'm sure any help you could offer would be invaluable. Thanks again. Laura.

Hi Laura
Really pleased that you replied.
I think that I've solved some of the mystery.
As I said, the key was finding James Farrar (John's father) in the 1851 census.
The information there is
James Farrar 43 - Copper Smelter
Ann Farrar 47
James Farrar 19
John Farrar 18
William Farrar 16
Mary Farrar 13
Edward Farrar 10
Henry Farrar 7
This in Eccleston, St Helens, Lancashire.
Then using this, going back to the 1841 census, we find
James Farrar 30
Sarah Farrar 30
James Farrar 10
John Farrar 9
William Farrar 4
Mary Farrar 2
Again in Eccleston
So John's mother was probably Sarah, who then died between 1841 and 1851, James re-marrying Ann.
If you then start to look for John Farrar in St Helens, you find a Christening record for 10 Feb 1833 for John Joseph Farrer, parents John Farrer and Sarah.
And here we are!! So the information in the 1871 census for John Joseph is correct, but he somehow changes his birthplace for the 1881 and 1891 censuses.
I can't find John in the 1861 census, but I haven't given up.
Hope this helps!
Kind Regards
Howard

Hi,
Was interested to see the Frost family info in your post. I'm currently trying to hunt down information about Joshua Frost born 1849 in Tanfield (son of Dorothy Frost). From his baptism record (1860) his step-father was Thomas Davenport. I know he was illegitamate and initially had his fathers surname, which I don't know (think he's the Joshua Galls? in the 1851 census). Would be interested to see what you've found out about Mary Frost (I guess she's the cousin of Joshua).
Thanks
