Alfred Mayo was b. unknown and died in 1893 Marylebone. he married Emma Elizabeth Cooper 16 Dec 1834 in St. Benet Grace Church & St. Leonard Eastecheap, London.
Emma was b.in 1816 in St. Machias, Colchester. her mother was Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a niece of Hannah Cross, who herself was the daughter of Peter Cross and Elizabeth Burnham. Hannah had several sisters, some of whom married and one of whom is the mother of Elizabeth, but we don't know which one. Hannah lived and died as a spinster and left an extensive will mentioning a number of relatives, including Elizabeth, Emma, and Alfred.
Hannah's sisters were
Elizabeth who m. a Mr. Bland
they had two children, Henry and Mary who m. William Pettitt
Sarah who m. Samuel Clark
they had 3 children, Elizabeth, Isaac who m. ? and had a son Arthur, and Joseph who m. ? and had a daughter Ellen
Margaret who m. ?
Jane who m. Joseph Jackson
they also had 3 brothers, Peter, Joseph and Wilkenson. Joseph is the only one we don't have an early death date for. we don't know if or who he married.
the known children of Alfred and Emma are;

Fanny b. 1843 Cupplegate, Middlesex
Alice b. 1844 London, Middlesex
Victoria m. abt 1867 Camberwell, Surrey, to William Henry Berry
nothing further is known about them.

they had one known child, Arthur b. abt 1868 Norton Folgate, London.
Arthur m. Eliza P. __?__ b. abt 1867 Yarmouth, Norfolk
they had 6 children;

Josephine Augusta V. b. abt 1891 Wood Green Middlesex

can anyone add to this? I would love to know Elizabeth's parents, but am interested in this line in any direction. I'd also love to know Peter's parents and grandparents-he's a cousin, we've proved that, but we need his parents and grandparents to link this branch to our tree.

being in America, I am slowed in my research, so I have made no advancements on this family since tracing some lines through to 1901. however, the main problem I have is finding the parents of the matriarch, Elizabeth (mnu) Cooper. we do know that she is the daughter of one of Hannah Cross's siblings. or so Hannah's will testifies. she calls her "my niece, Elizabeth Cooper" and the individuals I have verified in the will have the correct relationship term, so I believe she really is her niece. Hannah and her siblings were;
Peter, who d. young,
Elizabeth b. 13 May 1764 who had a daughter Elizabeth Bland b. abt 1788 whom we don't know who m.,
Sarah b. 29 Nov 1765 who had a daughter Elizabeth Clark b. unknown whom we don't know who m.,
Margaret b. 25 Apr 1767 whom we don't know if she m.,
Joseph b. 22 Feb 1769 whom we don't know if he m.,
Jane b. 7 Sep 1770 who m. Joseph Jackson in 1816, but we think they may not have had children,
Wilkinson who d. young.
and Hannah who d. a spinster.
so more research is needed on the children of Peter Cross and Elizabeth Burnham, which are the parents of Hannah Cross and her siblings as listed above. all are b. Colchester, bapt CofE but left and joined Quaker and other faiths.

I've no idea at this time if this is her, but a daughter Jane is definately intriguing. keeping the family names was a definate habit of the Cross's. this was the only feasable "hit" for an Elizabeth Cooper b. 1788 +-5 years.
many, many thanks for any help finding Elizabeth's maiden name or any marriage for her aunts and uncles.

some time back a more closely related descendant of this line found Elizabeth's marriage for both of us. Elizabeth m. John Cooper, and Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry Bland and Elizabeth Cross.
even earlier than Elizabeth's marriage, I also found out who Peter's parents were. They were Peter Cross and Mary Wilkenson of Suffolk. Peter, Sr. was the son of Edmond Cross and Mary Freeman. Edmond and Mary are my direct line ancestors, Peter is a collateral line.
the branches are now attached to our main tree. there are branches to fill out still, but the big mysteries are solved.

have you found any links to the cross family in the east london area or Middlesex ie: Spitalfields,Shoreditch,Bethnal Green,Hackney,Tottenham or Edmonton? I only have the line back as far as 1801 for definate on the Cross's but also have family names of Vandome,Painter,Reynolds and Appleby. The Vandome's were from france and were Hugoneots.

I recognise the town names but it's been some time since I focused on that-so it may be female branches of the family with non-Cross names. all of the towns are familiar except Edmonton...but a branch did settle in Edmonton, Canada, lol...
yes, memory just clicked in. Aubrey Cross, son of Aubrey Cross and Mary Church, settled in the Shoreditch area, some of his family went to Australia and I am in contact with one of the branches of his line...some of my branch were also in that area before they left for America...they somehow eluded the census taker in 1841, darn it!
I'll have to get into my old computer and really check my information-I can access it from here but can't use the search tool. I'll get back to you. I don't have your names in my file, but I'm missing a number of branches, perhaps yours is one of them.

same as Shoreditch-oh, they could have been there in the census, but not bmd'd at the places...that will take a different search.
Hackney...not as certain abt this one, though Tower Hamlet's close...hah! ok, do not trust my memory. however, none of the 14 individuals was bmd'd before 1810. the list includes one "married in", 9 very distant Harris cousins, a Lowry, an Oliver, a Richards and a Wixley.

4, all after 1810. a Harris, two Tiffins, and a Tylor (no a in that last name)
understandably, none of these may fit, so if you send me your individual Cross's, I may connect with them somewhere along the line. they could belong to an earlier branch that I know little or nothing about, and that I have no information of they or their offspring being in Middlesex or London.
please at least let me know your earliest Cross and I'll see what I can find. do you know their faith? most of the early Cross's in my tree were Quaker, but they were just about every faith by the mid 1800's.
