Title: Dobsons of Bolton
Post by: bettyespana on Wednesday 17 January 07 20:15 GMT (UK)
I have details of my husbands ancestors from Joseph Dobson b.Little Bolton 1834?
right back to Thomas Dobson who was baptised 22 Jan 1769 @St Peters Bolton le Moor 22.1.1769.
Thomas Dobson's parents were Thomas Dobson & Jennet Gradwell who married at the above named church 20.3.1768.

I have come to a standstill now as I cannot find the birthplace of either Thomas or Jennet.

All I have is baptismal dates for their 3 children,Thomas (as above) Edward 8.1.1775 & Alice 3.3.1771.all at St Peter's Bolton.

Is there anyone who can further my research with this family?

regards

Hi there

A POSSIBLE match on IGI (familysearch.org) is a christening of a Thomas Dobson, 9 Dec 1743 St Peter, Bolton le Moors, parents Griffy Dobson & Mary. Griffy & Mary also had Alice csd 2/12/1740 and Wm. 3/7/1747 again St Peter's. There is another child Elizabeth csd 17 Mar 1732, St Peter's - parents Griffy Dobson and MARGT. MANN (wonder if the Margt. might have been mis-read and it should be Mary?).

No parish register entries on IGI for either "Griffy" or Mary in Bolton le Moors christenings/marriages, but there is a church member submitted record (not always accurate or based on fact) of a GRIFFIN DOBSON (or (LEVER), born 17 Nov 1704, csd 19 Nov 1704 St Peter's. parents Thomas LEVER and Alice DOBSON (Alice and Thomas do appear in both Thomas's childrens names - could be a co-incidence of course).

May not be right but it's a start

Good luck

Shirl

Hi Shirl,

Thanks for this info.I will certainly consider what you have given me.In fact I have already placed the details on file.

It is very difficult having to rely on the internet only now I have emigrated.

Cheers & thanks once again.

What would we do without the internet! In case you haven't got this, the familysearch.org (where the IGI index is)is a free Church of the Latterday Saints site, if you haven't registered it is a great online place to check for parish records, but they only give basic details; the actual flms they used to transcribe the data may have more information e.g. occupation. Good news is there are loads of  Church of the Latterday Saints family history centres world wide, so you may even have one near you so you could see the original film.

Good luck

Hi Shirl,

Thanks very much but I have already looked into this.

My husband & I do not live near any of the LDS establishments & also we have real big probs with mail delivery here.So I leave that alone & just rely on people like your goodself to help.

Actually I do use the LDS site but i hadn't found what you had.

Cheers

Sorry  couldn't get back to you before now as my laptop was beyond repair but I now have this new one.It is interesting to hear that some of the Dobsons went to Australia.Griffith Dobson was my husbands 5xGt Grandfather via Thomas Dobson b.1743 to Mary Clark
My husband & I viewed the Parish records @ Bolton History Centre in 2011.
It is thought that when Griffiths 2nd wife Anne Whittle died 1738/9 he was left with 3 poss.4 children so took in Mary Clark to look after them. It maybe possible that Mary was the mother of Alice b.1740
Griffith married Mary in 1740

I can get no further back due to the fact that Griffith(known as Griffy) was b.illegitimate.In the records it states that Thomas Lever was the "reputed" father.
In the 1800s the Bolton Dobsons moved 1st to Warrington then to Salford.
Do you have any more info.
