Title: SHAW Ancestor by occupation-Painter
Post by: shaw.shoo on Tuesday 16 January 07 22:41 GMT (UK)
My ancestor John Shaw b 1824 in Devonshire (somewhere) emigrated to Canada (?when?) married 1873 and on his marriage record his occupation is noted as a painter. Since he was not too young of a man...I presume he may have been a painter in Devonshire.

Is there a place where one can search for surnames by occupation. Maybe I can find him that way.

The Trade Directories tended to be area specific. So unless you were able to pin point in what area John lived you'd have to look in every parish in Devon.

I had a quick look on the 1851 census and found a John Shaw on there. Born Chudleigh, Devon in 1829. He was noted on the census as being a Plumber, but his brother William was a Painter. His Fathers name was also William b.1795 in Chudleigh, he was married but there was no womans name on the Census

This is a possible to maybe look into further.

I've just had another thought   :)

You could request a names search on the DFHS website.

The DFHS have transcribed many of the Devon Parish records and sell them in Booklet form. To save money and time they offer a service where you can specify a surname to search, they then email you a PFD file containing all Baptism/Marriage and Burial of the specified surname. It only costs a few pounds and I've found it invaluable.

I did a search on the name Shaw and it came up with:

55 Baptisms from 1813 - 1839
57 marriages from 1754 - 1812 and
34 marriages from 1813 - 1837

Hi Karina,
many thanks for your input. I shall keep the idea of Trades Directory in mind, in case I find a more specific area for my John.

Yes, the John you found on 1851 Census has been sent to me already but no mention of brother William being a painter. This John could definitely be in the 'consider' list.  I looked in an atlas I have of Britian and found that Chudleigh is in Devon...so at least I'm in the right county.

RE: the DFHS site..I have been on so many site with wonderful information. but unfortunately some you have to pay for...which I fully understand. But since I use public access internet and my time is limited, it just doesn't work for me. BUT thank you for your searches and I shall keep this info on hand in case I find more resources to search.
