Post by: janan on Friday 19 November 04 16:20 GMT (UK)
Amos and Betsy FARR still lost in 1861 - Bedfordshire Boy has searched south of Luton.  John FARR and family have been found in 1841 see below. :D :D :D  My GGGrandfather Amos Farr born circa 1830 in Luton, Pepperstock, Caddington, New Mill/Mile End, Luton, Flamstead according to census,  married Betsy GODFREY.  Probably in St Mary's Parish Luton Newtown or Chase St   Thanks in anticipation. Hi Criggy,
Thanks for that.  If I've found the right John in 1871,  Amos' father was born and is living in Kingsbourne Green, Herts so I wonder if that is where Amos was actually born - it is close to New Mill End and Pepperstock. ;) regards Jan

Hi Jan
Re our exchange on the Herts board I've checked 1851 Kingsbourne Green (and Harpenden) but John Farr does not appear, although there are a couple of other Farr families in KG; Francis Farr 40 and family, and George Farr 22 and family, both born Harpenden. Let me know if you want full details.

I'll try looking for Amos in 1861 in Luton, but from my reading of the position, and correct me if I'm wrong, you as yet have no firm link between Amos and the John in Kingsbourne Green in 1871.

Don't forget that more of Caddington was actually in Herts than in Beds so it would be interesting to see the full 1851 census entry to see if it expands on "Herts" and provides the name of a village as well. The poor fellow certainly seems to have had a problem with his birthplace! He doesn't appear on the IGI under Caddington, though, which has been extracted up to 1875, so possibly it's one of the other parishes he mentions.

Have you found Amos in 1871? I can't find him at all.

I'll let you know if I find anything

Regards

David

Hi again David,
I eventually found Amos in 1871 under the bizarre Annis Fan - which was pure bad transcription as the original image looked like Amos Farr to me! You are right I don't have a firm connection between Amos and any particular John (it is the 1841 census I really need) it remains a puzzle. Thanks for your efforts.  ??? Regards Jan

Just posting some further info kindly sent by Waterfall

"What I have does not tell you what you really need......well I don't think so. I suspect that Amos was born at Pepperstock which comes under the parish of Flamstead in Herts.  I have found in my own line that the parish of
Pepperstock,Caddington and Slip End are sometimes referred to as  "Luton" on the census. My local library does not have   the 1841 for Caddington/Pepperstock/Slip End or Luton. I have checked the 1841 for Flamstead but Amos is not on it which is another indication that he might be on the 1841 for Caddington.......or maybe Luton. Does he not say on his marriage who his father is? Anyway here is the full entry for 1851.

Luton, New Town.

Richard Godfrey, Head, M, 43, Gardener, Hts, Hexton.
Mary Godfrey, Wife, M, 43, Bonnet Sewer, Bds, Pegsdon.

Hi.....that you should be so lucky.!! I had a shrewd idea as to where they might be in 1841 and there they were.........well think so. So up to you now.

1841 census.

East Hyde, Luton.

John Farr, aged 45, A/L, bn in County
Hannah Farr, aged 45, bn in County
Robert Farr, aged 20, bn in County
Emma Farr, aged 15, bn in County
Amos Farr, aged 10, bn in County
Matthew Farr, aged 10, bn in County
Mary Farr, aged 5, bn in County

I did have a quick look at East Hyde baps which only start from 1842 and looked up to 1851......got the following:-

11/10/1843 Martha d of John/Hannah Farr. East Hyde Hamlet. Labourer.

No others.

Burials at Luton St Mary (so I assume they moved from East Hyde to Luton after 1841..........Pepperstock in between.)

5/11/1848 John Farr, Luton , aged 58.
16/10/1857 Hannah Farr, Luton Union, aged 65.

Think this reiterates your assumption that Amos is son of John/Hannah.

Bye Susan

Susan you are an even bigger star!  :D :D :D Made my day. I suspect they moved about quite a bit (which is why Amos appears so confused) ,  possibly moving to Luton for work when John could no longer manage ag lab work for some reason. Death certificates are definitely the next step.  Thanks again,  :D :D :D Jan

Hi James
Is it possible that James, George's father, could be brother to my John born circa 1790 baptised  in Harpenden in 1797 mother John and Ann? Will let you know if I come across any definite links.
Jan ;)

I would be interested to find out.  Ive tried looking at the IGI indexes for the Farr family pre 41 census but have not got very far yet.
