Newark BURTON was my great-uncle. I know that this California Death Index entry is his as my mother just found an in memoriam card.
NEWARK LINCOLN BURTON
Birth: 28 Jul 1867 - OTHER COUNTRY
Death: 22 Dec 1942 - LOS ANGELES
He called himself Newark Burton until some time after he went to the USA (I think in 1891 to Ohio). His mother was Jane Ann Mary Maria LINCOLN. There was a family tradition that we were related by marriage to Abraham LINCOLN but I think it unlikely as my LINCOLNs do not seem to come from Norfolk (where the President's family hailed from). Maybe he added the name as it sounded good, maybe there is some connection.
I thought someone once said that he was a judge in Philadelphia. This could be true as he was 75 when he died and could have retired to California.
I cannot find him in any USA censuses on Ancestry, except a possible stenographer in Ohio. Are there any lists of Judges? I think he was quite important as another funeral card, now lost, mentioned a funeral procession with many black horses!
Any help gratefully received.

Hi Penelope
I have found "a" Newark Burton on Passenger lists index 1500-1900, indicating he was going to Ohio in 1891.\
(Appears to be what you have already)
His permanent entry # is 1733852
Source is quoted as "NATURALIZATIONS." In The Colorado Genealogist. Vol. 37:2 (Summer 1976), pp.54-57,59.
The annotation quotes that records were copied from naturalization packets at the National Archives of the U.S. District Court, housed at the Federal Center in Denver, Colorado, location No. 468350. Gives packet designations, new citizen's names, origins or birthplaces, counties in which papers were filed, dates papers were filed, lists of documents contained in the packet.
Mention of Ohio.....
1887-1892 Columbus Ohio Directory
Burton, Newark, boards at 280 21 st.
Works at Harrison, Old & Henderson.
Mention of Colorado.....
1893 Denver Directory
Burton, Newark L, stenographer
Employed by: Morrison, DeSoto & Macon
residence: 225 11th ave w, Denver
1897 Denver Directory
Burton, Newark L, Lawyer at 504 Equitable Building.
residence 1635 Marion, Denver.
He becomes very elusive after that date. If only we could locate him on the 1900 census......
Hope this information helps in some small way.
Valerie :D

What about contacting the Los Angeles Public Library and seeing if you can get an obit for him.
http://www.lapl.org/
It should be no problem, since you have an exact date of death. An obituary might give more information and a place to look farther.

Thank you both - Valerie, you are a star!! This is so exciting!
I will have a look at Denver; pretty sure that must be him. Didn't the little lad from Yorkshire do well?
I have a death notice for him, but will try for obits as well - have not found any using Ancestry.
I HAVE to do other stuff with the kids now, but will resume the hunt tomorrow. I have never tried to research anyone in the US before, so a steep learning curve?
Thank youfor your help!

The In Memoriam card gives:
SERVICES FROM
McMillan Funeral Chapel
CLERGYMAN OFFICIATING
Rev David F Barnett, Jr
Moneta Presbyterian Church
FINAL RESTING PLACE
Roosevelt Memorial Park
The latter has a website.
I wonder whether it is possible that they would have any information at this late stage?
Can one get US death certificates in the same way as we can here?
Just putting my ideas down, I find it helps me and may help others on a similar quest if anyone replies.
-
Hi
I've sent a quick email to Denver Library asking if they indeed hold Naturalization Records, and how to obtain the same, if they do.
Fingers crossed.
Valerie :)
-
Thanks, Valerie
That was another question I was going to ask, following from the detail in your first post.
Any idea about getting US death certs?
As you can see, I have not tidied our rooms, but searched away, emailed the Roosevelt Memorial Park etc.
Best wishes
Penelope

I have also trawled through pages and pages of 1900 US census records, with no luck. There is a newal (but illegible) Burton in Denver, but his birthdate is clearly 1853 so does not seem to fit.

I found that one, too.....sob

Penelope, I have found the same article in 2 different newspapers in Colorado in which the Governor has appointed persons, in particular, Newark L Burton, as notaries public. The article appears in:
Glenwood Post (Glenwood Springs, Garfield County), Dec 21, 1901
Basalt Journal (Basalt, Eagle County), Dec 28, 1901
Also, at the Colorado State Archives I found a Bar Admissions record for Newark L Burton of Arapahoe County; Dec 2, 1896
---file number 294, I believe it is located in the Supreme Court
If you want copies, send you email via pm.---Genealiza

First let me say, this man's birth years are all over the place. I read the Denver census of 1900 and it could be construde to be Newark. However, I took the wife from 1900 and looked her up in the subsequent census. I have them in 1910 and 1920. Haven't been able to find them in 1930 and since it is getting late, I'll just transcribe what I've found, excluding the 1900 census, since you've already looked at it.---Genealiza

Genealiza,
Thank you so much. How did you find all that?
I am just about to PM you but wanted to thank you online. Within less than 24 hours I have a load of new information, and such admiration for Rootschatters, but also for Newark BURTON - a lad from a family of joiners in N Yorkshire ends up a lawyer and a judge in the USA.
I have many more questions to answer, but Thank you so much.

In the 1910 Alaska census, I seem to be able to convince myself that the obscured occupation reads "Attorney at Law" for Newark and his lodger.
Which would fit.
I need to find a marriage for Newark and Emma. Cannot find on Ancestry (including posh US subscription) but not sure if I am searching correctly. The Alaska census implies they married circa 1894, after emigration. I have looked in UK BMD and cannot find one there either.
Sadly it looks as if they had no living children. But then who sent my father the In Memoriam card?
Incidentally I found many good pics of Juneau when Newark BURTON was there:
http://vilda.alaska.edu/index.php
I put in Juneau and got 823 images. There are other resourced there which might help.

Do you know when his wife died? Possibly she is the one who sent the in memorium card.

I am afraid that I know nothing of Emma, but the censuses seem to indicate that she was 10 years older than Newark, so I thought she might have died earlier than 1942.
NB I have just found a reference from The Alaska Daily Empire to him attending a buffet luncheon with Judge Jennings, over on the Ancestry/Rootsweb Alaska/Juneau board.
How great this all is!

Just found on Ancestry newspapers from the Fairbanks Weekly News Miner; Nov 5, 1920 a paragraph with the referring to U.S. Commissioner, N L Burton---Genealiza

Question: Does your library hold Naturalization Records for Denver ~ 1895-1900?
If so, how does one proceed with obtaining a copy of the same for family history
purposes? I am seeking those of my grand uncle Newark Lincoln BURTON, born 1867
in England.
Thank you
Valerie

Good Heavens, Sandra, you are amazing to go to so much trouble on my behalf. Thank you so much! I never thought anyone would resurrect this 12 year old thread, and did have most of info in your earlier posts. However, I don't have many of the newspaper clippings in your later posts. The real gem, however, is Emma's death in 1922 which has eluded me.
Neil M Burton (1922-2000) was the son of Jean Goudie Russell's previous marriage, I think. See 1930 census. Jean was 39 and Newark 60 when they married in 1932. Neil M Russell was 10 when they married, and seems to have taken the name Burton at that point. I do not think Newark and Jean had any children.
Incidentally I wrote the FindaGrave pieces on Newark and Jean. I asked for a picture of the cemetery and had their gravemarkers posted within 24 hours, by another amazingly helpful person.
So, thank you all again.

Pleased to have helped pick up some scraps of info. It all helps create the story. :)
