Title: BDM - Harriet Emma SHEPHARD (nee SMART)
Post by: Benjy on Sunday 14 January 07 05:12 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I am looking for the Marriage of Harriet Emma SMART [daughter of Charles SMART and Harriet (RAYMENT)] to James SHEPHARD around 1880 in New Zealand.

ALSO, if possible the Birth of Harriet Emma SMART circa 1862
AND  Death for James SHEPHARD between 1880 and 1910.

Thanks in anticipation, Benjy :)

Hi there,

Checked NZ marriages 1836-1956, Only marriage for a Harriet SMART was to an Alfred SMITH-1869, also checked all spellings of SHEPHARD, James , no brides by surname of SMART.

Checked 1893 Nz Elec Roll, No Harriett SHEPHARD, NO Harriett SMART.

Cheers

Dear DEL,

Thanks for your comprehensive reply - which means that I am back to square one!

My source for the NZ marriage was her Death Certificate from Victoria of 1943.

The only other thought is that she was known as Emma SHEPHARD in Victoria in 1910 before marrying for a second time. She may have dropped the Harriett altogether to avoid confusion with her mother.

An additional thin possibility is that she was surnamed GREEN (from an earlier marriage) when she married Mr. Shephard in NZ ca. 1888.

Hence, I am down to two slender threads, if you would be kind enough to try to tie them up... N.B. In case it is relevant, her father, Charles Smart was listed as Doctor and Farmer.

Kindest regards, Benjy  :)

Hi Benjy,

Hope this doesnt confuse you, I just wanted you to know that I looked as hard as I could.

I ran a search in the marriage index, for the start of the groom names , to rule out any spelling variations, SHEP.. First name James which pulls it up as a first name or a middle name. No Joy there Im afraid

Tried the bride the same way SMAR..as Emma & Harriet Smart, got a hit Emma Smart 1882 marriage to a groom William Smart, and a hit 1892 Emma Smart to John Turner. Then same marriage for Harriett to a Smith.

Then tried Green, as GREE, for first name Harriett and Emma. Hits for Emma Green/Greene, but none to a SHEPHARD or varaint. Same for Harriett, Hits but none to a Shephard

Even checked mothers maiden name in case- no such luck.
