Title: Murder of William Stone 1877
Post by: Wack on Friday 12 January 07 15:49 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find information about William Stone b 1828 in Fleetwood UK
He was murdered on the 17th October 1877 at his Gold Mine at Cold Canyon Nr Howland Flat, Sierra County, California
A chinese man was later hung for his murder. Later William Stone's brother erected a large monument to him in what we presume is Howland Flat. This was at the height of The California Goldrush and Howland Flat was one of the richest seams in North Yuba

There's a Fleetwood in Lancashire, England, it's in Poulton-le-Fylde parish.  Do you know the name/details of his brother?

Hi Jorose
His brother was called James. He was a seaman: We are their descendents living in the UK.
There is still a relative living in Fleetwood. William's story is a family mystery. We have copies of the wanted poster for the killer and a picture of the memorial. We are hoping to find information about his activities in the US. We know he had a goldmine and have a ring made from a gold nugget with the initials AES, which we presume was his wife in the US
Thanks for the interest

Wack,

Welcome to Rootschat. I have found a link that has information for libraries in Sierra County.

Libraries are a wonderful resource. They will find articles and obituaries for you, usually at a minimal cost.

I am also playing around on Ancestry. Do you know where William was living in 1870. I have found a William Stone in San Francisco with wife Emma and two kids, William, 4, and Jennie, 2. He was working for a blacksmith.

Do you know when he came to America and any of his movements over here?

Kath
