looking for any information on james cottee born 27th july 1823 his father is listed as william stedman his mother is listed as harriet cottee(cotty)
james cottee came to australia on the 'china' on 7th september 1841 his passage paid by nichols and co he was listed as a gardener ,his father william was listed as a hop grower alive in 1841 ,his mother was listed as dead in 1841 in australia james went under the name of cottee he was a well known stockman and worked for george cox on a property called burendulla ,it s a puzzle to why he didnt use his fathers surname of stedman
any help would be greaaaaaat

The birth/baptism on the IGI has James listed with his mother's name, so the assumption would be that his parents were not married (at least at the time of his birth). If you live near a LDS family centre (locations can be found via the home page of family search - http://www.familysearch.org ) - it would be worth looking at the parish record - this may give some information as to the marriage state of the couple.
The registers are also available from the West Surrey Fam hist Soc

we are lucky to have been give a photo of thomas cawdell and eliza jacques who are the mother and father in law of my cottee ,
i had put information on the igi ages ago have tried to change some but i am no longer a mamber its a shame as so much information has changed with illegitimate children
i will try a lds the next time i get to sydney

thanks for posting the photos - they are great. I'm not sure where you live but there are many many LDS centres outside of Sydney. Did you check them all online viz

Not sure if you will get this message as it seems you haven't been online here for some time. I am researching the Cawdell family, originally from Baldock and Luton. I have a James Cawdell married to Eliza Jacques 1846 in Ireland. They have 11 children, four of whom appear to have settled in Australia around 1865'ish. I am wondering whether any of them are connected to your tree?
