Title: Honor oak, Forrest hill Cemetery
Post by: mnbarrett on Thursday 11 January 07 11:27 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I wonder if anyone could tell me if there is a website to search or request from this cemetery, or if i have the correct name of the cemetery.

They are not for deaths going back too far, about 30 years. I would just like to have the references for records, or a visit.

Thanks

Hi there,

I used to live near to Honour Oak & One Tree Hill in South London. (A long time ago now:-)

Are you sure that you don't mean Nunhead Cemetery?

Romilly.

Could be, my uncle usually refers to it as Forrest Hill, and he lived in London along time. But just receintly he called it Honor Oak.

So I am not too sure

Thanks for the info

Hi,

Still not sure if this is the one that you want, - but here is an Article about Nunhead Cemetery:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/articles/2005/05/10/nunwood_cemetery_feature.shtml

There is also a Crematorium near there...but was it definately a burial that you're looking for?

Romilly.

The records of burials are all held at the Camberwell New Cemetery on Brenchley Gardens, Forest Hill. I recently visited for records of burials at Nunhead Cemetery (they also hold records for other Cemeteries in the area). The records are freely available to search there at the cemetery Office. I believe you can request a search by mail but understand that this costs about £21 per search (rediculous). Worth going in person if you have more than one burial to check. I found several references to my ancestors buried at Nunhead, but you will need an approximate date of death. Be warned though, once you have the grave references you will need a cemetary map (available at the office free of charge) and that Nunhead is notoriously overgrown. Also, unless your relatives where reasonably well off, there could well be no headstone to find, as happened in my case. The Cemetery has suffered badly from vandalism, so many gravemarkers have been destroyed. The staff at the cemetery office are very helpful and will guide you through the process.

The friends of Nunhead Cemetery have a web site where you can obtain a map and various other publication:

Happy hunting

May be Brockley Cemetery.
Lewisham has four cemeteries - Hither Green, Grove Park, Ladywell and Brockley - and Lewisham Crematorium.

Over 140,000 burial and cremation records from Lewisham cemeteries are available via the bereavement services office. The borough's records are not available in electronic format. A search fee of £20 is payable for this service.

Any additional information can be obtained by contacting bereavement services between 9am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday, using the contact details below.
