I am trying to get back into my research after a small break.
I have a death certificate for my GGGG Grandfather Alexander Davidson who died 18 Mar 1874, aged 74.
The informant was his son John Davidson, and the parents were stated as William Davidson and Catherine Young.
A search in the IGI turns up no marriage for William Davidson and Catherine Young but does turn up the following children :-
- John Davidson, baptized 1 June 1782
- Jane Davidson, baptized 3 June 1784
- Andrew Davidson, baptized 2 Nov 1786
(all baptized in Kinneff and Catterline parish)
The closet match in can find for Alexander's birth is:-
- Alexander Davidson, baptized 22 Oct 1801, Kinneff and Catterline, father William Davidson, mother Margaret Anderson.
A search on the IGI also turns up the following children for William Davidson and Margaret Anderson, all baptized in Kinneff and Catterline:-
- William, baptized 29 June 1788
- James, baptized 3 May 1790
- George, baptized 15 Mar 1795
- Rachel, baptized 13 Apr 1798
- Alexander, baptized 22 Oct 1801
I am now puzzling over whether Catherine Young died and William remarried to Margaret Anderson.
The children with Margaret are after there is no more with Catherine.
Also, there is no repetition in christian names.
Could it be possible that perhaps the informant got his information wrong.
Or perhaps Alexander thought Catherine was his mother because she was his older siblings mother ?
Perhaps i am just clutching at straws here and it is indeed 2 separate family's.
but if it is 2 different family's then where is my Alexander son of William and Catherine (Young) Davidson birth/baptism record ?
Can anyone help me, all suggestions would be extremely welcome.
Thankyou,
Debbie

Hi Debbie,
The Kinneff Parish Register records the hire of the mortcloth for funerals from 1641-1662, 1737-1846. I can access the Register, and hopefully there will be an entry for Catherine Davidson or Young soon after 1786. Should there be, I feel that your suggestion of a second marriage would be valid. I'll also have a look at the births/baptisms of Andrew (1786) and William (1788) in case the name of a farm is mentioned. If the same farm, then this would also support the possibility of a second marriage.

Hi again Debbie,
I have searched the Kinneff O.P.R. and found the following:
John Davidson born Mortshillock.
Jane Davidson born Mortshillock.
Andrew Davidson born Temple.
William Davidson born Mortshillock.
James Davidson, George Davidson, Rachel Davidson and Alexander Davidson all born Temple.
These places are farms within Kinneff Parish.
1786, Decr. 12 To Do at the burial of Katharine Young in Mortshillock two pounds eight shilling 2.8.0
1787, May 27 William Davidson and Margt.Anderson both in this parish were married.
1817, May 2 To Do for the Mortcloth to the funeral of William Davidson, Temple 0.4.0
(This could be either the father or son.)
In view of the above information, I feel that it proves that Margaret Anderson was William's second wife. Hope this helps.

At some point a DAVIDSON married a BERTIE.
I found Elizabeth DAVIDSON b about 1763 who married John BERTIE on 8.7.1787 Montrose, but cant link them with my George Davidson BERTIE, who was born abt 1880 Auchenblae, Fordoun, yet.
