Title: The hamlet of COTHILL
Post by: KN on Tuesday 09 January 07 21:28 GMT (UK)
Does anyone have any experience of the hamlet of COTHILL?

I've learned from the 1851 census that Richard Drewe was born in Cothill in about 1816.  It's a hamlet to the north west of Abingdon but isn't a parish.

Has anyone ever had residents of Cothill using a particular local church?

Hi KN

From an 1848 directory

COTHILL, a hamlet, in the parish of Marcham, union of Abingdon, hundred of Ock, county of Berks; containing 45 inhabitants

There are certainly Drew/Druce families there slightly earlier than that, unfortunatly the transcripts I have only go to the start of the 1800's not quite far enough for Richard, he seems to have moved to Abingdon before his marriage in 1834 that, and his childrens baptisms are at St Helens - let me know if you need them

Thank you for your efforts!  I've have found the Drew family in the Marcham parish records, as you say, they are a little early for 'my' Richard Drewe.  However, looking on the IGI, I have now found a batch covering just a few later years, and there is a Richard Drew born Marcham 1813, so it could be him, although the date is a little early.

Yes, I'm vey interested in the St Helen's births, I presume this is St Helen's Abingdon?  I looked at the PRs (from Oxfordshire Family History Society) and again they finish earlier than the dates that I'm likely to need.  Is there an online source of later St Helen's records or do you have another source?

Hi KN

I think the Richard baptised in 1813 in Marcham is very likely your man - his parents were Richard & Elizabeth and from the baptisms at St Helens Abingdon (OFHS CD) it seems that by 1822 they had moved to Abingdon

baptism of Sophia   DREWE 1822 08 Dec  daughter of  Richard & Elizabeth and possibly
Harriet  DREWER 1825 09 Oct  daughter of  Richard & Elizabeth

sorry I was wrong about the dates covered by the CD - it does only have baptisms up to 1837 - though it has some later marriages and burials - so

1834 05 Oct DREW Stephen son of Richard & Mary Ann
1836 29 May DREW George son of Richard & Mary Ann

2 early marriages you might be interested in

1833 23 Jun Henry  THOMAS to  Sarah DREW
1834 19 May  Richard DREW to  Mary Ann PEART

When Richard was buried in  1884  (March 21st) his age is given as 70 which would tie in well with a baptism in 1813

Hope you find this helpful
