I have reason to think that my gt gt gt grandfather William Thomas died in an explosion at Clifton Hall Colliery in 1885, Pendlebury. Does anyone have a copy of the list of men who died in this explosion?
I have searched Google but cannot actually find a list of the men who died,
thanks

Thanks for the reply Nigel... June 1885, that fits when William Thomas died...he was a miner, pity there isnt a list on the internet... I believe there is a list of 64 of the miners at St Augstines Church. Pendlebury
The information you show, just shows how dangerous they knew working by candle light was and they still allowed it, I will look forward to reading it in more detail, I just skipped through it when i clicked on the link!
Thanks for replying.

Hi There,
Listed in Pauline Sauls book "The Family Historians Enquire Within" (5th Edition) is the address of a man who is collating an index of persons killed in mining accidents1850 -1920 on receipt of an SAe he will send details. From previous experience information given out was very good.
Will put his details here as I assume that is okay because he had them published but if not pm me and i will get them to you.
Mr Ian Wistanley

Will also ask my friend to look at the memorial to them at St Augustines as it is her local church.

Thank you Heather for the details, If I am over this chest infection I might have a ride over to the church at weekend see if i can find anything out too, There is lots of info on the net about the church but they all mention the memorial but not the names on the monument. If I do go I will write the names down and put them on the site, so at least others in the future will have access to the names.
I can then write to the gentlemen you have recommended if Williams details are not on the monument or actully he may be buried in the church.. that has just occured to me!!

Thank you for the link!.... I now think William was injured and not outright killed on the day, as he didnt die until July, aug, sept quarter but i still think it might be something to do with the explosion as he was only 49 when he died, which is young

I have just found this post from several years ago there is a list of all the names of the men and boys killed at clifton hall but two names are missing i have also checked the mining data base and i can't find a william thomas for clifton hall this does not mean that he did not die there with a list of over 200,000 names it is more than likely many are missing we are talking of an era when life was very cheap
hope this helps you if you haven't already found what you were looking for

A good rescource site for mining accidents is: Coal Mining History Rescource Centre, I have it saved as a link but I have not got a NVQ on how to show it here. If you just type in the name it should show up.
It does list the mining accident you asked about plus a list a names.

I have only just discovered roots chat whilst looking up clifton hall colliery disaster, and realise your posting was a long time ago.
Two of my relatives died, but although there is not a William Thomas listed, there is a Thomas Williams, though I am sure you will have found this out by now.
However, William Thomas was the father of Emma Thomas, who was my grandmother's mother.

The Thomas Williams who died at Clifton Hall was only 19.
There is a William Thomas aged 49 who died in the same area in the same quarter, but a little later. None of the others on the same page of death registrations are in the casualty list.
It's possible that he died from injuries received, with his death occurring after the inquest, but the death certificate would clear that up.
