I've hit a brick wall with my Ramsays. From the Old Parochial Register in the Parish of Belhelvie I do know that William Ramsay married Helen Laing in 1841. William was described as being from Tarves. He was born about 1819, as he was shown as being 22 years of age in the 1841 Aberdeen census.
I haven't been able to trace his parents or find a death record for him. His daughter, Helen, married in 1865 and he was shown as deceased at that time. I can't find him in any census after 1841 so he could have died before 1851. Any William Ramsays I've checked for death records hasn't proven to be him so far. I'm thinking a search for an MI may be the last resort. By chance can anyone help me? Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim
According to the ANEFHS online MIs at www.abdnet.co.uk/mi-index, there are no William Ramsays in the Tarves Kirkyard.
There is however a Helen Laing in the Belhelvie Kirkyard who died 5 Dec 1865. Is this possibly your Helen? There's no William Ramsay there though.
The online index doesn't have the full inscription, but the MI booklet is available from www.anesfhs.org.uk price £2.25, or perhaps someone here on the board has a copy to refer to.
Hope this helps

Hi Gary,
Yes that's my Helen. I've been able to trace other family members. William has fallen off the face of the earth. Perhaps he's buiried in a cemetery in Aberdeen since they lived there during the 1841 census. Thanks. Jim

I have the book of the kirkyard of tarves an dthere is no mention of a william ramsay in it

If helen died in 1865, you should be able to get a copy of her death certificare from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. This should tell you if William was still alive in 1865 or if she was a widow.

Thanks to both of you for the info. Helen is shown as a widow in 1851 census. William was last recorded in 1843 birth of a son being at Catto Square, Aberdeen. Although the marriage record of 1840 showed he was from Tarves I've found no birth record as to where he was born c 1819. I believe he's buried in a cemetery in the city of Aberdeen but which one and the fact the cemeteries don't seem to be indexed is my conundrum. Many thanks, Jim

Hello Jim,
No further forward with your search. Just lost a couple of hours of my life on it though :O)
Have been on the IGI (www.familysearch.org) - searched for Wm Willm and all combinations 1815 =/- 10 years - there's about 300 in Scotland. None 'your' one. I'd have expected his his parents to have been called Alexander and Helen - if William and Helen had followed the Scottish naming pattern with their 2 children. - found on IGI - were there more?
Had a look on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for birth of a William Ramsay in Aberdeenshire from 1810 to 1822 - there are apparently 4. Didn't have the credits to look them up. (blame the house extension :O) The reason for the date range is that sometimes people - both men and women -would be economical with ages - especially if marrying a younger spouse.
They had 2 children (according to the IGI):
2. Alexander Ramsay b. 14 Oct 1843, c. 09 Nov1843 - Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire Scotland
1. Helen Ramsay b. 09 Feb 1841, c. 07 Mar 1841, Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
The 1841 census shows the parents in Catto Court, Aberdeen, William (22) Helen (19) and a 4 months old Helen jnr. No occupation given for the adults. They were in St Clements parish which is in Aberdeen City. Folio 1 - Page 19.
Belhelvie parish where the children were christened and where Helen (snr) is buried is to the north of the cty.
see: www.urie.demon.co.uk/genuki/ABD/parishmap1.html
It is a strong possibility that as UglyDuckling found Helens burial site in Belhelvie Kirkyard, that your William would be buried or at least acknowledged on the gravestone.
Good luck with your search.
Regards, Steve :O)
Can you please clarify how you came about Tarves as his birth place - was this on the OPR marriage entry? Thanks very much ......

Steve, thanks for that. In the marriage record of William Ramsay & Helen (nee Laing) it said he was from Tarves...not necessarily born there. Despite the fact that both children Helen & Alexander (my great grandfather) were born at Belhelvie, I believe William remained and worked in Aberdeen. He was described as a Merchant. Alas....he's not buried in Belhelvie with Helen and her parents & family...the Laings.
I've been on Scotlandspeople and dug up what I think are the possible William Ramsays and none seem to fit. I think my best chance is finding an MI or the death record in the Parish records. Many thanks, Jim
