I have just started researching my family tree, i know very little about my fathers side, as have not had much communication with him or his family. Does anyone have any links to these people.
My great grandparents:
Edna Foster (nee Marshall)
Edward Foster
From what i have heard they came to New Zealand from England or Australia,
Other great grandparents:
Muriel Elizabeth Carlton (nee Truelove) Born early 1900s in England. Came to NZ when she was in her late teens with her family.
Alan Durwood Carlton, would really like to know where he originated from, I have just been given info that he died in 1962. So I now know where he is buried, thanks to a very nice researcher on familytreecircles!
I think all this family settled and stuck around the lower north island, especially lower hutt area.
This is all i know and seem to be coming up with nothing.
Any help or people with links to this family?
Thanks
Cat
Have modified this as some names were wrong when i started the post! Have corrected them, sorry to all that have been trying to hunt down the Fosters!! :-[

Hi Cat all I have found is Taita Old Monumental Lower Hutt
Edna Foster Cemetery Record Aug 28th 1977
Alan Durwood carlton July 17th 1962 Taita Old Monumental.
You could get their death certs which would tell youi their parents
Good Luck in your search KateNZ :D
-
Hi Kate NZ
Thanks for that, i think i will get some certs on them, i don't know any dates at all so its making some things a little difficult, would be alright if i had contact with that side of the family, but my attempt has not been returned as yet! I thought my mothers side was going to be more difficult but i have tracked back to 2x my gt gt grandparents on my grandmothers side now. Finding it easier researching family in the 1800s then it is to research early 1900s! Especially when there are marriages or babies out of wedlock! England seems to have alot of places to search yet my family seems to evade all records!
For example my last name is Bishop and it only dates back to my gt grandfather he was the only child in the family with that name, its like his mother just grabbed it out of thin air! She had 3 last names that i have come up with so far, maiden and 2 marriages, none to a Bishop!
I enjoy doing this research but i think some things i may have to get a pro in for them to be resolved! ::)
Once again thanks
Cat

Hi there ,
Marriage
Year 1942

Spouse TRUELOVE, Muriel Elizabeth
If you want to give me the name of your ancester, that seemed to "pluck", the Bishop name out of thin air, I can check the NZ marriages index 1836-1956 for you, to see if we can solve the mystery.
Cheers

Hi Delboy
Thanks for that! The Bishop i mentioned started in England so wouldn't be anything in the NZ index sorry. Thanks for the offer though!
Do you know if there was a marriage for Edgar Foster and Edna Walker in that index? They may have married in England, but i don't know for sure.
Thanks Cat

Hi Cat,
No marriage for Edna and Edgar sorry.

Hiya Bunny
Wow thats great, it seems to all fit with Edgar and Edna because family have been saying that there is a link to australia. Yet saying that it was convicts (little too late for that obviously and they were born in England by the looks lol). we just want to dig up something juicy i'm sure! apart from Agriculiture labs.
Thank you so much Bunny, that is fantastic info which i think fits very nicely! You have just given me a big boost in motivation.

Here is Dad. He comes with two names. If correct he was birth registered as Francis Norman in the September quarter of 1882 in the district of Camberwell, Vol 1d, page 854. Based on his 17 year old son I guessed the marriage would have been not too far from that and found one for Norman Frank Truelove in the June quarter of 1902 to either Catherine or Emily in the district of Woolwich, vol 1d, page 1789. It is quite possibly the same person who just fiddled around with his name.

This is possibly Nora Millicent who was born in the March quarter of 1909 in the district of Greenwich, Vol 1d, Page 1043.
Please bear in mind that this is an enormous pile of quantum leaping based on vague date boundaries. The family appear to come from around the Greater London area and moved around a lot. They would appear on the 1911 census....when it bothers to come out!!! You should see if you can find Norman on the 1901 census with his various name combinations based on his 'birthdate'.
Maybe some NZ marriages exist for the rest of the family? There must be so much more out there still to find. Has not been as easy to come up with possibilities for the Fosters but I'm working on it very slowly. Hope you don't mind the theorising - plenty for you to get stuck into anyway.

Way to go Del!!! :D
That helps determine that the other boy in the family was Jack Raymond Truelove and he was birth registered in the December quarter of 1903 in the district of Lambeth (London basically), vol 1d, page 457.
Based on Del's work there is a birth registration for a (wait for it) Gollie Kathleen L Truelove in the March quarter of 1910 in the district of Greenwich, vol 1d, page 986 which may be the Cathleen Lucie noted in the marriages. I'd probably not refer to myself as Gollie either....maybe she picked up the habit from her father! ;D
There is always the very vague possibility that A M Truelove who arrived in Auckland is the Alice Nellie Truelove that married. Transcription may have been off????
We march on!

Oh my god, you guys are fantastic! My head is whirling with all this new info!
I will follow your advice with the nzarchives.
I started out with just a pic of Muriel, i had no communication with my father until last week and he doesn't seem to know much about that side so this is huge help. :-* Thanks.
I may have some info on the Foster side coming as i have just made contact with my grandmother, hopefully she will be able to shed some light on this yet my relationship with her is very new (no contact since i was um..1 :)) so i'll see.
Thank you for all the time and effort you guys have put into this, i appreciate it so much!
Thanks, Cat

Hi
I checked the 1901 census for Francis N Truelove and found Frank Truelove, the only possiblility, born abt 1881 in Brighton, Sussex. Living in Fulham, London. His father was Benjamin Truelove. A widow. Sounds right to me. Thanks for help on this Bunny and Delboy.
;D will keep looking,
Cat.
-
Hi Cat,
And still more progress!
Karori Cemetery, Wellington, NZ record:
Area 12, Block BF, Row 19, Plot 010
Francis Norman Truelove 26 June 1964
Philip Truelove 1 April 1941
also our Mum Catherine Mary 5 Feb 1966
This means that Francis/Frank/Norman (whichever name he wanted) married Catherine Mary Turner as I noted in that huge previous post with the whole family.
Cat - don't forget to search in the census for the other name combo's like Norman Truelove. And try for Trulove as well. You could be right as birth registrations didn't mean the baby was actually born where registered - they had three months to do it after all. But good work, you! ;)
Since there is no record of Philip in the family he may have been a late-in-life NZ baby for them or is a grandchild of theirs. So now we have some family in the Hamilton area, and some in the Wellington area.
Cheers

Well this has triggered my dads memory and Francis definitely married Catherine. He thinks he may even have birth cert for Francis, which means he probably has alot of other things as well! And i'm on the right track with the census's so far Francis was a bricklayer, as well as father etc.
He also has the ship papers for the family, it cost them 5pounds&6shillings for the whole family.
So all he needed was a little nudge to get the memory working!
Francis actually built chimneys at Cross Creek near Featherston.
Oh and he has a photo of Catherine when she was 18! He is getting me a copy. Thank you Bunny and Delboy for the help, if not for you Dad may never have remembered all this! (or at least thought to share the info!)
Thank you!!
Cat.

Hi Cat,
Well there's some good news for you then! ;D So pleased that we've managed to unlock your Dad's memory. Now run like the wind and clean out your father's house! This minute! Raid it for all information you can get your hands on! ;D ;D
Ah, the blessings of the genealogy juggernaut as it steamrolls through families..... ;)
Now where are those blinking Fosters!!!!!
Anytime you need help, just holler!

Hi Cat,
This is brilliant, I am stoked for you. Dosent it feel awesome when you get those longed for breakthroughs.
It always amazes me how the elder folk say they dont remember/know anything,( I get the same thing all the time), but usually its the smallest tidbit of information that brings all the memories all rushing back to them. I agree with Bunny, get on that information train while its still chugging.
Thinking outside the suare or as Bunny puts it "quantum leaping" Really pays off sometimes. There are grey areas in genealogy, its not always black and white.
Hope we can get the same results with the Fosters :)
Cheers

Looks like you're in with a grin now.

-
Wow thanks for that Ian,
Yes the Fosters are very good at hiding their tracks aren't they! I'm hoping my grandmother may have some info soon that can maybe help some!
A tiny bit of news on Carlton side from dad was that maybe a generation before Alan immigrated from Scotland, he mentioned Alan had a brother named Jack, and he had something to do with the Caledonia Society, also mentioned Clan Farquarson. Haha i won't even attempt to find that link as yet, bit out of my capabilities i think. But if someone could possibly help me find a immigration from Scotland to NZ for Carltons that would be fantastic, may be a stab in the dark for all i know but worth a go. Dad is unsure if Alan was born in NZ but seems to lean towards it. Also maybe bit of Spanish there somewhere but i won't say for sure. Possibly mother is. Thought i'd mention, maybe pointless though!
Ian, your census's are great, they fit better then the trail i was following! I seem to always get on wrong track! Always good to have a second pair of eyes aye!
Thanks everyone!

-
Hi there Madam Cat,
While Ian is going backwards (in a good way) I'm going forwards. :D
From 'The Dominion' on Friday June 26, 1964, page 18 comes the following:
TRUELOVE, Francis Norman, or 35 Bolton Street, Petone. On 25 June 1964 at Wellington, beloved husband of the late Catherine Truelove and loved father of Jack, Muriel, Joe, Nora, Kathleen and Alice: in his 82nd year. No flowers please. The funeral service will be held in the Small Crematorium Chapel, Karori Cemetery, tomorrow (Saturday) June 27, 1964 at 1pm. EH Shirley & Son.
...and then I happened to look sideways and saw....
Roll of Honour Deaths:
TRUELOVE, Francis Norman, No. 527406. Royal Army Medical Corps, 1914-1918 World War, Boer War verteran and member of the K.E.V. Association.
Now I don't yet know what the KEV Association is but the last word has to be Veterans I suspect. Emigrating Veterans??? Anyway that fortuitous glance means you can probably crack onto his military records in the UK given you know what his number was and what type of unit he was in.
But I still had a problem. The obit said 'the late Catherine' but I had already told you that she had died after he had!! That meant I had told you a porky (or the NZSG Index had in that it has a typo!). However all is not lost. After another quantum leap here is a notice from 'The Dominion' on Tuesday February 7, 1956, page 1:
TRUELOVE - On February 5, 1956 at her resident 35 Bolton Street, Petone, Catherine Mary, dearly loved wife of Francis Norman Truelove, and loved mother of Jack, Joe, Muriel, Nora, Nellie, Kathleen and the late Phyllis and Phillip, aged 73 years. No flowers please. Private Cremation. Gee & Hickton Ltd, Lower Hutt and Petone.
So what does this tell us apart from the fact that Catherine died in 1956 instead of 1966? It confirms that the Phillip in Karori Cemetery is their son. Don't know where Phyllis is. The notices also confirm that Alice Nellie is their daughter and more than likely the AM Truelove that came out on the Rimutaka. Also if Catherine died in 1956 aged 73 that puts her approx year of birth at 1882/1883. www.freebmd.org only has record of two Catherine Mary Turner's born in that period. One in the June quarter of 1883 in the district of Woolwich, vol 1d, page 1180, and one in the September quarter of 1883 in the district of Camberwell, vol 1d, page 927. The Woolwich one is more likely as that is the same district where Francis Norman was birth registered (I think). However getting their marriage cert would clear up which person is which. I'm betting on the Woolwich one.
And then upstairs in the Wellington City Newspapers Index I found this wee gem:
TRUELOVE, Jack Raymond - On June 18, 1984, at Christchurch. Dearly beloved husband of the late Jean, loved father and father in law of Judith and Peter Cousins and a loved grandfather of Michelle and Nicola. In his 81st year. Messages to 57 Stanbury Avenue, Christchurch 2. A funeral service to be held at Christchurch tomorrow (Wednesday). Lamb and Hayward Ltd.
So while I was feeling happy with that I forgot to look Phillip up! Will go back and do that at some point and also look at the Christchurch papers to see if there is more info on where Jack may be buried as he is not in any of the Christchurch cemeteries.
All in all a good days work there, I think. ;D
Cheers

;D WOW. That is great Bunny! Thank you so much. Haha funny that he was in military as Dad said he thought he was a soldier, i said to him about Francis being a carpenter (shipping papers) and he then dismissed him being a soldier, yet he was right wasn't he. My dad is known for making things more interesting then they really are (the spanish link??) haha, but maybe he is actually right! I did say to dad that he may have been a soldier at some point.
Anyway that is fantastic bunny! I appreciate all the time and effort you have put into this! I got a bit creeped out over Catherine, my name is Catherine and never realised that there was another in the family! then to see she may be born 1883! I'm 1983! lol. I get creeped easily! ::)
Cat ;D
-
Dear, dear Cat,
Being creeped out isn't all that bad sometimes. Call it something spiritual, call it intuition, call it a sense of family if you will....and then sometimes it comes calling for you!!! ;D ;D ;D
Ha ha ha ha! Now I'm just messing with your mind ;)
Anyway here is today's daily news.....
1. Jack Raymond Truelove (who appeared in yesterday's episode) died at a place called Averill House in Christchurch. This no longer exists in the telephone directory so may have been a rest home that has another name or has been closed or is part of something else. The funeral service was held at the Canterbury Crematorium Chapel in Linwood Avenue, Christchurch, and was held on the Wednesday at 12:45pm. This notice has been brought to you by 'The Press', Tuesday June 19, 1984.
Based on that it appears likely that his ashes were either scattered or returned to the family. I ask you, what's wrong with being buried somewhere so we can actually find our relatives!!!!
2. And from 'The Dominion', Wednesday April 2, 1941:
TRUELOVE - On April 1, 1941 at Wellington Hospital, Philip Patrick, beloved youngest son of Frank and Catherine Truelove of Kilbirnie, aged 16 years. No flowers by request.
So that gets us closer to who Philip was. It says the youngest son but not the youngest child, but yesterday in the death notice of Catherine it says Philip last in the list of kids. He seems most likely to have been the last born. And he would have been born in approx. 1924 or 1925.
Ah, the sweet sound of holes being plugged! :D
Cheers

Bunny, do you know the best way to access the military records for Francis? i have had a quick look on sites yet haven't found anything, being new to the this sort of thing and the first ancestor with a military record i have no idea what ways i can go about it! Any advice would be appreciated!
I will check with Dad to see if he has Catherines death cert, he seems to have inherited most of the family documents so he is bound to have it, have only been in contact with him for a little while so haven't really talked to him too much on the subject, just bits and pieces so far, yet he seems quite keen to share all he knows (as he remembers it!!)
Thanks
Cat ;D

Hi there Kitty Cat!
British military records specifically for WW1 are a bit hit and miss as the place where they were stored took a hammering in WW2 and lots were destroyed by bombing. Your best bet is to go to the National Archives site at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk and read up on the Military History part of the website. It comes with guidance and refs and addresses for asking for things. Don't forget you can always post on the Military Board of Rootschat to see if some nice person will go and investigate the microfilm for you to see if there is any hope that his military records survived.
In any case this addy http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ will take you to the bit where you can search for Francis in their online index. If you use the top left box and put in Truelove and the date range of 1900-1949 it will bring up heaps but you will find him in the WW! Campaign Medals list on page 2 about halfway down the page. If you hit the 'Details' button on the right of his record you will be able to see what ranks he held and that you can buy online an image of the service medal card which bears his name and what he received. From this record you now know his Corps (confirms what was in the obits) and his Regiment number as well as his individual service number from the obits. If you ask for a volunteer to go and search him out you will be able to provide good info for them to start with. You can find him quicker if you use the advanced search and put in his first and last names.
Unfortunately the military records thing is not that easy but there is always hope of finding something. At least you can get the copy of the medal card.
Cheers

Hiya Bunny ;D
Thanks for those sites! I was thinking earlier and remembered about the military board here, will see what i can scope out before i post anything, am going to have a look at that site right now ;D Thank you so much.
Ian
Thank you so much for those census's, baptisms, deaths and marriages! You were busy weren't you! ;D I appreciate all the help, it would have taken me ages to come up with all the information i've learnt here (if i ever could have!!)
Many thanks
Dear Madam Kitty Cat (hahaha) ;)

Another source of info is wills.
The National Library in Wellington has the UK Wills and Admons index on fiche from 1857-1943. From the reference on those you can order the actual will through the NZSG.
Quite good for finding who daughters married. One I had did not have any children himself, so left everything to a nephew, but named everybody, even his father and grandfather.

Hi Ian
Thanks for that info, i'm learning quite a bit ;D I'm having a few hassles joining NZSG, am waiting for a reply from them concerning the membership. So i am very patiently waiting on them :) Hope they respond soon as i have a big build up of things i want to order etc! My partner is going to go bonkers when he sees how much i plan on spending hehehe.
Hmm Wellington is a fair way from me so i would have to figure something out for access to that. But very handy to know! Thank you very much, i hope one day i will be as on to it as you and Bunny! ;D

Hi Kit Cat,
Just so lucky for you then that I'm in Wellington! Ha! I'm even an NZSG member but I can't get to meetings as I have something else on that night (poo). However that means there would be more than one of us working on stuff, wouldn't it. I tend to use the National Library and the National Archives a lot. Had a look on the Archives probates database and they didn't have any Trueloves that I could get to but I didn't check for Fosters or for Truelove married daughters either. Could always have a go at that at some point.
Cheers

Hi Bunny
Wow that is really nice of you! Hmm those Fosters were very crafty in hiding their tracks weren't they. I have nothing except their names and what i have learnt in this post! I have written to my grandmother who is their daughter and am waiting for a reply (taking a while!). She should be able to tell me abit about her folks yet i have never talked to her (as i was a baby when she was in contact with my mother) so who knows if she will be interested in telling me! Dad seems more interested in the Truelove side (he loved his grandmother Muriel very much) and has not even mentioned the Foster side!
So fingers crossed that something will pop up as they seem very mysterious and interesting to me now! ;D Same with the Carlton line. (I don't think i knew what i was getting myself into with starting this family research...so much fun and very addictive!)

Hi!
I have some news on the Foster side! I received a letter from my grandmother today and it turns out my father wrote the wrong names in my baby book Tree. >:(
My gt grandfather wasn't Edgar Foster, his name was actually Edward Foster. And his wife was Edna Marshall, not Edna Walker! They had 8 children! I can only name 3 as the rest are living.
Their names are: Edward, Donald and Peter.
Some great news is that my grandmother also gave me my gt gt grandparents names! They are:
George Foster
Winefred Cannon.
They had 5 children, one may be alive still as she didn't write 'deceased' beside the name.
Their names are: Hazel, Leslie, Joan, and of course Edward.
So that may be why they were so hard to find! Because Edgar and Edna (marshall) didn't exist! I am very sorry for wasteing your time on those 2! :-[
I'm meeting my father tomorrow, i can't remember meeting him before, but i am going to give him a big telling off!
My grandmother was only able to tell me one thing about the Carlton side and that is that Alan and Muriel had another son Keith. Don't ask where Jack came from ::)
Otherwise she didn't tell me anything else, no dates or facts. I may have to ask her more questions to get that!
Sorry once again for the wasted searches! I appreciate all the time you guys put in!
Thank you
Cat ;D
