Samuel, a tinplateworker and born in 1842? was, I believe, resident at Garden Lane (St Oswalds) Chester. Is someone able to confirm the address and those resident at the time of the census please?
Thank you

Hi Mark,
Welcome to RootsChat!

They give the address as 8 Raymond Street and with Samuel is Martha his wife and 7 children:
Emily 13
Ellen 12
Edith 10
Elizabeth 7
Thomas H 7
Martha A 3

Samuel is shown as a Tin Smith.

Samuel's son, Thomas Henry was born in 1874 and remained in the Chester area where his first child (I believe) was born in 1903, in Shotton.
Can anyone confirm this from the 1901 census please?
Thank you

Hi Mark,
Had a quick, free, look at 1901 index and found a Thomas H Groom b Cheshire but living in Flints, Hawarden and working as a "stationary engine driver".
Did not spot any other Grooms that could fit the bill! If this is not your man then he could be mistranscribed; every branch of my tree has mistranscriptions on 1901 census.

Thats him..
"free" look? I'm sorry I'm new at this and thought there was a cost for everything?
Can you direct me?
Thanks

I went to the 1901 census site and just used the basic search box (first name & surname); then had a look through the list which was in order of age; youngest first. I often use this route just to check things!
Also watch for "free access offer" to various websites which Rootschatters always advertise; very useful.

Tried it and yes confirmed a middle name from 1901, thank you..
I'll keep my eye on the "free access" offers, thanks again.

I'm having problems confirming the age (year and quarter) of both Samuel and Sarah from the above 1851 census. From checking both Free and Cheshire BMD's there is conflicting information, i.e different birth years and then no record at all?
Can I ask someone to kindly check the age entry for both on the 1861 census, they still remained in the area if not at the same address.
Thank you

Suz..
Thats brilliant thank you and yes I can agree that Samuel's date of death is correct and that Sarah was indeed Sarah Ann with a birth year as shown. The information is all there however there seems to be another query thrown up with Frances's year of birth. Census's for 1871 & 1861 add up however the one for 1851 would suggest she was younger (date of birth 1816 or 1811?).
I notice that the BMD records only start at 1837. When trying to find out dates for earlier periods where would you then turn?
Thanking you
Mark
-
pre Sept qtr 1837 for BMD we need to look at parish/church records
You may not get d.o.b. as very often just the baptism date is given

Thanks Suz, you've been very helpful..
