Hi Karenlee,
Thankyou for that interesting information.
I didn't expect to find a Chemist as Charles's occupation.  I'll have to a bit more digging this end in Aust.
One of his grandsons eventually became Lord Mayor of Unley in Sth Aust. and had quite an interesting civilian and army life.

Really appreciate your help - Sashar

Hi,
I'm a bit slow on the takeup here.
On the 1851 Census, Walter who was b.1847 Lambeth is missing.  I've lost Walter and gained Edith, who I didn't have on my records before.

Walter came to Aust, married and had children so I know he was alive in 1851.
Is it possible to find Walter DOLLMAN on the 1851 Census?

From the previous info that was sent I have been able to find some of this family on the LDS site as well as records in Australia, thankyou so much - Sashar

Sorry, can't find him at all.  Maybe was with family and got put under their surname and not his own.  Grandparents perhaps given his young age.  Any ideas ??

Will keep trying though.

Hi Karenlee,

Bit mysterious isn't it?
DOLLMAN and PARMETER are the only 2 surnames I've got so if there is nothing under those I guess he'll have to go missing - Where's Wally?

Thanks for your help, if I get any ideas I'll get back - regards,  Sashar

Hmm, I think Eliza might be in Liverpool in 1841!

Nelson St, Liverpool (HO 107/565/3 12/16)
Jane Preston, 40
Jane Neal, 40
Mary Parmeter, 50
Eliza Parmeter, 20
Amelia Parmeter, 15
all born out of county

(I note on the IGI that Eliza Harriet is the daughter of William and Mary and does have a sister Amelia who was christened in 1827)

Incidentally, one of Charles' brothers, Alexander Plenius, appears to marry in Liverpool in 1841 - I wonder if that's how they met?

Hi Jorose,
Thankyou for sending that information.  I did find Eliza's baptism & parents on LDS which confirms your finding of William & Mary.

I'm really pleased to have the 1841 Census results for them as I didn't know about Amelia.

If you have further info you can send on Charles family I think that would prove interesting.  I have nothing on them, so I was excited to see you had found Alexander.  That Christian name pops up in the family in Aust.
I've also just found in Aust. that Ruth Dollman, a daughter of Charles, married a John HOOD and he was a photographer from the UK.  I think he was born c.1839-1842 but I don't think I have enough info to trace him yet.  He came to Aus as an adult and he was already a well known photographer/artist in the UK.

Appreciate anything you can find - regards, Sashar

In one online entry I find reference to John Hood as an artist/colourist for a photographer originally, although it seems he also did photography:

http://www.artgallery.sa.gov.au/noye/Colorist/Hood_j.htm

In 1861 at Wellington Road, St. Marys (Lambeth) - RG 9/362 82/40, there is:
Elizabeth Hood, 52, b. Staffordshire (widow)
and son John Hood, 19, also b. Staffordshire (I think it says 'Darley' - the image I get on Origins is not that good).

Hi Jorose,
Thankyou for sending the site re John Hood, looks as though he came to Aust. c1868.  On his marriage in Adelaide, it says his father is Samuel Hood.
Where he had his galleries is the same area that his  children were born.
I might see if I can follow his trail in Sydney, the last child I have found b. in SA was in 1887.

It didn't say on the 1861 Census what John's occupation was?
You might not be able to read it.
Thanks for your interesting find - regards,  Sashar

Just found a site that says John HOOD was born c1839 Reading, Berkshire, England, and died 15th May 1924 Sydney.
According to his marriage in SA he should have been b.c1842 and it also states he was a Widower.

If he came to Aust. c1868, he would only be on 1841,1851 & 1861 Cenus.  His father should be Samuel.

Could that make finding him any easier?

I have now found John HOOD'S 1st marriage and that was also in Adelaide, to Mary Martha HUBBE in 1871.  They had 4 children, and their names match with what was written in the website entry sent by Jorose i.e.  Samuel, William, John & Thomas.
All the dots are connecting well - thankyou Jorose.

Mary Martha died 1881 and he married Ruth DOLLMAN in 1882.  So now I am positive we are chasing the correct John HOOD, Photographer/Artist, supposedly born Reading Berkshire 1839.  There seems to be some discrepancy with his age as on his lst marriage it makes him b.c1841 and 2nd marriage, b.c.1842.

I've veered off the Dollman track a bit but this has been an interesting find - anything else is a bonus, thanks,  Sashar

I found the will of william parmeter dollman in the national archives on the PROV site. I am tracing Charles Dollman from Birmingham who came to melbourne in 1870. He was a wine merchant. Is there a connection between the two families. If you want details of the will, let me know.

Hi Jess,
William Parmeter Dollman was born 1846 StGeorge Han Sq and died 1908 Nth Adelaide.   Parents were Charles John Dollman and Eliza Harriett nee Parmeter.
William Dollman married Jessie Sparkes YEATES 1894 Hobart, Tasmania and they had a daughter Jessie born 1895 in Nth Adelaide.  Unfortunately both wife and baby died a few days after childbirth.   I don't have anything further on William Parmeter Dollman, so details in a will may reveal further information, I would love to accept your kind offer.
Birthplaces of Dollmans in my tree have been, Westminster Middlesex, London & Surrey.    I'm not sure when the Dollmans came to Australia, but the first Dollman birth in Sth Australia was 1854.   I only have 2 Charles Dollman's in my tree and neither would suit being in melbourne in 1870.
You can PM me with will details if you wish.
Kind regards,
Sashar

Hello regarding Parmeter/Dollman,

I am researching my husband's family and I have found a Dr Thomas Parmeter who was sent to Australia for bigamy. His parents were William Parmeter and Elizabeth Dallman.  With the similar surnames of Dollman I was wondering if you felt there is a connection.  I have done many sides of my family tree however only just started this side because my husband's elderly family really didn't want to to know the truth, so I didn't go anywhere with this line.

I am in NSW and if you think there maybe a connection please contact me.  Thomas was transported to Australia ine 1816 on the the ship Fanny.  He was a surgeon and I have read had a twin brother named Francis, but we know little else about his life in England except the marriages.

Hi,

I am direct descendant of Charles John Dollman and Eliza Parmeter (great great grandson).  I have in my possession the family bible which details the family history, as well as photographs, documents, etc.  Happy to answer any specific questions.  I also have considerable information on related branches and connected families.  The Birmingham Dollmans are not related.

Hi JD,
I am descendant of Charles  Dollman in Birmingham. His son Charles Arthur Dollman came to Melbourne Australia in 1870. You say they are not connected, but have you come across any info that may be relevant to my hunt in your searches. ?
It seems both our 'families' ended up in Australia as I know some of the Dollman Parmenters went to Adelaide.

Thanks, jess

to Jess,

I am currently in Sydney but will return home to Adelaide on the weekend and will look through my files.  In the meantime check and search http://newspapers.nla.gov.au which has many Australian newspapers back to the early 19C.  I am sure that a number of references in the Melbourne Argus refer to the Dollmans of Birmingham.
