(Many searches can be done without credits including post-1983 BMDs and volunteer indexes, but you will need credits for certain searches as well as for viewing images of the original pages)

Yeah credits get used up really quick...
Some useful databases on there though.

I have a subscription, but you pay for searches as well as images. However their census transcripts are good, but I much prefer findmypast for bmds and census, much cheaper, especially on an annual sub. Barbara

They make it sound good by saying it is a 30 day free trial. I used the credits up in about 30 seconds!
Every lookup costs, and they don't tell you when they are going to deduct credits to check if you want to go ahead and view.
I was disappointed.
May be OK for a one-off lookup.

I had a years membership with this company. :'(
I wouldn't touch them again even if they were the only genealogy resource
available..........on or off line!! :o

Thanks for the tips guys, not as good as it looks then.

It seems to be a "one off" offer and I had my some time ago; I too used my credits very quickly.

Don't be too confident - I can't get into the site despite receiving activation code - it tells me I have already had one ' freebie ' !!!!!!
-
I have had another unpleasant experience with this company since my last posting in January :(
I had a lot of unused credits........mainly because I was unable to log on at times. Because I wouldn't renew my subscription ( I had the credits but was unable to use them!) they informed me that my 420 credits couldn't be used up without a "current membership". I lost the whole lot!!
They were completely unconcerned when I complained.
I would never deal with them again...........nor recommend them.Stay clear.....there are better ways to do look ups and better companies offering a far better service. ;)

Looking at their terms & conditions at http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/nameindex/products.php?&showterms=yes#terms
Apparently: Credits have no monetary value - they are a means of ensuring fair access.
So why does it cost to buy them? ???

I did a similar offer at this site before and just the same as it is now my results return nothing of interest. I would never subscribe to this site anyway as there are better sites out there that do not operate with this credit system.

isnt this a part of the society of genealogists who want 40 quid a year for subs

No, it certainly is not. The site is owned by Genealogy Supplies (Jersey) Ltd.
I have been a member of the SOG for about 10 years, and I can assure you that the resources they provide are well worth the subscription. Some of the information I have had from using the Army List alone, has been outstanding. An Aladdin's cave, no less.

I am a very satisfied customer of The Genealogist, although I do have Ancestry too. I find the BMDs very easy to search, I can keep my place, unlike on Ancestry. They also have Phillimore transcriptons of marriage registers for many parishes I need, and an increasing number of specialist indexes, like Army and Navy lists. Give it a try!

I don't know what you guys are on about, i've been with TheGenealogist for ages and I love them ! If you dont like the credit based subscriptions you could have gone for a credit free instead. The trial does say you only get 25 credits so it's quite clear on that, I guess the 30 day bit is how long it's valid for. Their census is much nicer to print out than ancestry and I've found them to always be pretty helpful whenever I have a problem. They've always replied to my emails super fast unlike some companies that take about a week to reply.

My last posting on this company is over three and a half years old now and I
guess things could have changed in that time!

I've got subs with both TheGenealogist and Ancestry. I've never had a problem with TheGenealogist - their census search by address is excellent.
-
I guess they must have changed abit over the years. The Keyword search is my favourite, you can add just about any thing without a name and search across all the transcribed records. I've found quite a few bits on there that have been elusive else where. I wish they would hurry up tho and add the 1911, I keep hearing it's coming on in the Diamond sub but no news as yet :'(
