Title: John LESLIE - Death by accident - Hetton-le-Hole
Post by: Caromich on Tuesday 02 January 07 20:03 GMT (UK)
I wonder if someone could look up a Coroner's Inquest or newspaper reports please?

My ancester John Leslie died on 3 March 1869 as a result of an accidental kick of a pony.  He was a labourer, though most of the rest of the family were miners, so I'm not sure if said pony was a pit pony??  John was aged 30 or 31 at the time of his death.  He was buried on 6 March 1869 at St. Nicholas', Hetton-le-Hole.  A Coroner's Inquest was held but I don't know if this would have taken place between the death and burial dates, or subsequently.

I'm hoping that there is some newspaper coverage of this event and/or the Coroner's report is available for reading.  Any info would be gratefully received, including reference numbers to enable me to order copies of documents.

Many thanks
Caromich

Hi Caromich,

I take it you haven't got his death cert.  on www.freebmd.org there's a death for John Leslie aged 30  ref: March Quarter 1869 Houghton 10a 276

I've checked a couple of mining sites and can't find his name in casualty lists of mining accidents.

Hi Barbara

Yes, I do have the death certificate, which states there was a Coroners Inquest.  Just thought there might be a newspaper article about the unfortunate event which would give more details about the circumstances surrounding John's death.

Not sure if it is possible to obtain reports from inquests....??

Hi Caromich

Coroners inquest have been destroyed for that period, but you might get lucky & find something in the paper.  Try the Local Studies at Darlington Library, they have a lot of North East newspapers & also County Hall at Durham.

Cheers

Hi Jay

.... that's a shame, but at least I now know I need to concentrate on newspapers rather than the inquest report.

Many thanks for the info.

Caromich.

Hello,
Was a Post Mortem performed? In which case records of this may still exist - try the Coroner's Office and the Pathology Department in the nearest large hospital.
Good luck,
David
