Title: Bourke/Burke disappearance
Post by: SASHAR on Monday 01 January 07 06:34 GMT (UK)
Hoping this won't prove too difficult.  I'm researching the BOURKE/BURKE family and I'm not having much luck in tracing 8 out of 9 children.
Patrick BOURKE/BURKE m. Mary LONDERGAN/LONDRIGAN/LANDRIGAN 1846 in Adelaide.
Patrick's father is John BOURKE and he brought his family to SA in 1846 on the Canton. The family consisted of John, his wife, un-named, and children Patrick (mentioned above), Alice, Johanna, Catherine and John Jnr.   Mary Londrigan was on the same ship, so obviously a ship romance between her & Patrick.
Patrick & Mary had the following children born in Sth Aust.:-
Ellen b.c1847
John b.c.1848
James b.c.1849
Margaret b.c.1851
Patrick b.c.1853
William b.23.8.1856 River Light, baptized Bagots Gap/Kapunda
Mary b.15.1.1857 - I have all her details & her baptism sponsors were Johanna & John Bourke (Patricks siblings?)  Mary m. 1881 Mallala, John FARRELLY and I have all the details of their children etc.
Alice b. 14.7.1858 Bagots Gap, baptized Bagots Gap
Catherine b. 23.9.1859 Bagots Gap, baptized Bagots Gap.

Apart from Mary b.1857 I can find no further information on the children of Patrick & Mary.
I would appreciate if someone has time to check the deaths after 1915 for any of the children under BURKE.  I have checked BOURKE without result, although I admit I'm going a bit cross-eyed with this search.
I would presume if nothing is found that they may have gone interstate or back to Ireland.
Appreciate any help or advise -  thanks,  Sashar

Thanks Jenn,
I wonder if Mary Teresa was born in Victoria.  That would be c.1860 and the last child born in SA was Catherine in 1859.
I'll have to check SA for a marriage and see what I find.

Interesting find, thankyou - Sashar

Can't find any more SA births i.e. Mary Teresa, nor a marriage for her in SA.

There is a death of a Patrick LONDERAGAN/LONDREGAN 16.5.1883 aged 59, last residence Kulpara which is in the Pt Broughton Council area.  That could be Mary's brother.

Still not solving where the Bourke's disappeared to - oh well!

Thanks again,  Sashar

hello  there Sasha

it is a  bugger  that  there  certificate  don;t  have  the same  info  as some of  the  other states  it  would make  it so  much  easier  ah  well  we cannot  change  the  past

if  they  went into  nsw  it  will be difficult  searching  the  online  for  parents  patrick  and mary bourke/burke

do  you  have  patricks  siblings  marriages  from  the  1850/1860

Computer just did a little crash but all is well again.
Patrick Bourke's siblings - I have found some info, not all definate but I'm working on that too.
Pretty sure I have Johanna correct, she married James BURFORD.
I've only found 1 Alice that fits, so I presume I have that correct and she married Patrick FITZGERALD, soon after arriving in Adelaide.
There are 2 possibilities for Catherine, either Theodore BOCK or James DOLAHAN.
John Jnr. has 3 possible wives,  Mary HAMMOND, Margaret QUIGLEY & Catherine MAHONY.
Once again because of lack of info on the records, mainly missing father's name on the marriages, I'm stuck.
I haven't rechecked the BISA for all these yet, I may get lucky.

With Mary Bourke being b.1857 and marrying in SA in 1881 you wouldn't think the family had moved interstate.  I know that Mary's husband John FARRELLY was born here, stayed here in SA, and died here.   So Mary & John had to meet in SA.

You wouldn't think Patrick & Mary, would name another daughter Mary, when they already had a Mary who was fit and well.

Hopefully something will turn up.
Thanks again,   Sashar

Sashar, I checked the 1916 -1972 SA Deaths Index - so many Burkes listed using the given names you mentioned and none of the ages really match up.

However, I thought the following may be of interest......

Ellen BURKE died 3 Nov 1942
aged 84
Relative John Burke (Husband)
Residing  Bagots Well
Died Bagots Well
Ref; Kap 656/5973

John BURKE died 12 Feb 1943
aged 77
Widower
Residing Bagots Well
Died Bagots Well
Ref: Kap 660/801

Hi Dee,
Thanks for doing that mammoth task & checking the Burke deaths for me.
Those 2 you sent look really interesting, but once again the dates don't fit.   I'm beginning to wonder if they lied about their ages, I can't fit Ellen & John BURKE together with a marriage with those details.
I will have to check the BISA tomorrow and see if something connects, Ellen & John may have been married before coming to SA.
I really appreciate your time in helping me with this.
I'll have to sleep on it and see what tomorrow brings.
Thanks again for your time and help - Sashar

Hi Sashar,
The Patrick Londeragan whose death you have mentioned above is buried at Kulpara Cemetery.

At Burra Cemetery is one Alice Fitzgerald. buried 17/4/1884
There is a Patrick there also, but his death was in the 1850's so not sure.

Your thoughts on Catherine's marriage are maybe born out by another 2 burials at Burra.
Catherine Bock buried 1/7/1904 Last at Kooringa Plot 35
Theodore bock buried 6/3/1890 Plot 35

There is not any obvious connectin in the couple of Dolahan burials recorded...no Catherine

[I hesitate to recommend this site as it is EXTREMELY temperamental.]

Hope this is not repeating what you already have.

Hi Sue,
Thankyou, I hadn't found the Bock burials and that does look an obvious connection re time and place, much appreciated.

I've tried to find the Alice Fitzgerald that you mentioned but I'm not getting anything to show up.

I'll keep trying - kind regards,  Sashar

Hi Sashar
That is because it is a temperamental and flimsy bloody useless irritating  site.
[Note on the search page it says 'State wide search not available.' Well it sort of is if you can be bothered with it]

Never put in anything but a surname.
This, when I did it for about the 3rd time, brought up all interred Fitzgeralds in the state .
[For a few attempts before this, it showed totally no Fitzgeralds in the whole state ever!!]

Don't use specific shires or cemeteries, just State-wide.
Let me know if you have ongoing difficulty and I will just send the entry
Sue

Got through to the Burra Site and found the Fitzgerald's.
Of course, no ages at time of burial.

I will keep all that info and see what I can connect with it - thankyou Sue.

Wondering if one of the children of Patrick and Mary, Patrick b.c. 1853, could be the GGF I’m looking for..?
My Patrick Burke had 7 children with Annie Gooley in South Australia from Ellen in 1878 to Hilda Catherine in 1896

I found out years after my post that this was not my BOURKE family.
Mary FARRELLY nee BURKE/BOURKE's death notice is in Trove and she had no other family in Australia or that came to Australia.  She was from Ennis, Clare.   I was lucky to find an elderly relative that confirmed most of what is written in the TROVE newspaper notice.

Could well be the family that davethomas2021 is searching for although I imagine there are a few Patrick Burke records in SA.

Thanks for the reply Sashar, particularly as it’s been so long since your original post! You’re right, there were at least a couple of other Patrick Burkes kicking around in South Australia at that time, but I’ve got the feeling that this actually could be the right family. If you ever managed to find any additional clues, I’d be very interested!
Kind regards, Dave
