Title: Perhaps a dumb question but I have to ask...
Post by: Tees on Sunday 31 December 06 20:38 GMT (UK)
Hi Rootschatters,

I have a dumb question that has to be asked:

Is it possible for me to trace my ancestors who returned from the USA to reside in Ireland permanently?

This may had been between 1865 and 1871.

According to the family stories, my great great grandfather was in the US Army and was horrified by the whole business of Civil War. He decided to take his Irish-born wife and American children with him to his home county, Co. Clare. Some 20 years later, his Irish-born son left Ireland for America and never returned.

I am trying to find out where they may have been living in the USA so I can do some guess-work when they may had emigrated.

My distant cousin could not answer my questions about this part of our Family History. The only information I have is what given to me. I managed to find the Irish censuses on my great great grandparents and great great uncle who was born in America.

I know that my great great grandparents had two sons born in Ireland-one of them is my great grandfather and his younger brother.

I know this is somewhat complicated but I would like to unravel the mystery!  :)

(I think it is a bit odd for my great great grandparents to return to Ireland as I know many Irish would not entertain the notion in those years. I guess my great great grandfather must be a person with strong moral senses to be upset by the whole affairs in the 1860s USA.)

Another reason is to find out whether they married in the US or in Ireland since we only have a year 1854 in our very ancient Family Bible.

Kind regards,

Tees

Have you checked the passenger/immigration records at ancestry?  They would cover the period for the person who returned to America, and might state where he was headed more precisely.
It was certainly not unheard-of for people to return to their country of origin.  I have seen several examples of this on passenger/immigration records from time to time, although none that pertained to me.

www.findmypast.com may be another source.  They are about to launch an index of people leaving UK beginning 1890.  In general, I find them more comprehensive than ancestry, but I know nothing about this latest offering, which is on a fee basis.

Post a lookup request on the United States board, with all the information you know. If there is any information to be found, it will be.  ;)

Hi Loo,

I have tried to wade in the passenger/immigration records and was terribly confused/overwhelmed!

I was after the records that will show the passengers returning to their native country. As it will be a good one since I have a name of one of their American-born children, it is only a positive identification I have on the couple if I were to find them.

I am fairly good with the censuses but a bit better with the BMD and a bit of IGI.

Once again, Happy New Year!!

Kind regards,

Tees

As liverpool annie has said, there don't seem to be any passenger records for going in that direction.  I don't know why not, though.  That's why all I could suggest was the other one.  Unfortunately the free access at ancestry is over now, but I'm sure someone will be able to check it for you.

Hi Loo,

It seems I am out of luck.

I realise it is somewhat difficult for many who have Irish ancestors to track them down. Sometimes I wish there was no major losses of Irish censuses to start with!!  :-\

I have a little problem with this branch because I have other information to make up for some deficits.

Appreciate your taking time to reply to my post. Hopefully, one day, someone could help me out.

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi Loo,

I would have to agree with you on that point! :)

I have been at this for 15 years now! I can wait another 15 years if needed! :)
