Title: Cant fix this one
Post by: celia on Thursday 18 November 04 16:31 GMT (UK)
A few weeks ago i was sent an attachment from a friend, but it had been wiped clean. Mistake i thought, it was sent again as were others.Same thing happened  since then i have been sent important  geneology information from variouse council departments and burial ground Information from Scotland. All these are wiped clean. The message on the Email reads " OE removed access to the following unsafe document". They could not have been unsafe concidering where they came from. I have never had this problem how do i fix it please ???

It could well be a virus. Your virus software should catch them if that is the case, or it could be your email settings. Have you changed or updated your software recently?

Hello Jen I ran my  virus checker a few days ago, nothing there. It's been run a few times since this has been happening. No Problem with my email. I don't  touch software. I will run my Checker again + the Maintenace checker and see if it brings anything up. will come back later with any results

In Outlook Express select the Tools menu > Options > Security tab and then under "Virus Protection" untick "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" and click OK.

BUT never open any attachment you are not sure where it has come from. Also under VIEW>LAYOUT turn of open preview pane. This stops e-mail opening automatically as this can sometimes be a threat.

Try this Celia: Click on "Forward" and the email will open in  a window ready for the new address to be typed in; it should then be possible to click on the attachment and open it.

Its likely that you have experienced Microsofts "nanny" type security which came with one of their latest patches for the likes of Outlook Express and Outlook. As Michael has pointed out the security set up on the program is now automatically set to reject ALL attachments rather than just dodgy ones.

IF you follow Michael B's instructions it should (hopefully) clear the problem but do remember to check any attachments first with your anti virus program

Jen   all is well in that department

Michael I have now done that, will now have to wait for an attachment to see if it solves the problem

Gardener  As my attachments have been emptied i cant try that one yet.

Falkrn I don't have patches I tried at one time downloading updates  from microsoft i may need. According to the search  i needed a whole lot of critical updates. As i didn't know much about them i just down loaded two that i knew about. They messed up my machine and i had problems for age's.

As Someone said to me recently if it's not broke dont fix it ;D               Celia

Sorry to insist, but if it is like this -
when you open your email it says "OE removed access to the following attachments in your mail:XXXX" ?
If so, the clicking on forward brings up the message WITH attachments - or at least it does for me! I have to do it all the time, for PDF format mostly. Don't know why.

This is part of Microsoft Secruity patches as someone rightly said but the only way of changing this is a registry hack to the OS that I would not advise.

Go to the link below & download DetachOL.exe
This is a GUI for making the changes - so if you run it, follow on screen commands etc & after restarting Outlook Express all sorted.
