Title: Presbyterian Minister
Post by: CrichtonD on Saturday 30 December 06 09:41 GMT (UK)
have been trying to trace more information on my gg grandfather who was ordained by the Presbytery of Ayr in 1828. Someone at the library in Edinburgh has kindly had a look for me in the Fasti Ecclesiae Scotiae and can't find him. Does anyone know if all ministers appeard in this book or where I can go from here? He lived in Northern Ireland from 1829 and I have a full history of him from here but believe he originated from Scotland and thought the Fasti would have more details on him. His name was Reverend John Millar . One of his sons had connections in Largs. I think his fathers name was Alexander and his mothers maiden name maybe Cochrane. Any help greatly appreciated.

Mr. John Millar ordained 13 July 1828 by Presbytery of Ayr as 1st minister of Toberdoney Presbyterian Church (Co.Antrim).
Might be worthwhile checking Ayr Presbytery for information- minutes of Presbytery meetings before and around 13 July 1828 might mention John Millar.

There's a separate Fasti for Ireland, so if John Millar was a minister only in Ireland then he would be in that one alone. It's searchable online at www.ancestryireland.com but you need to be a full Member to access it. I paid myself and found it (just about) worth the money for my trio of Irish ministers, on which I had few other details :)

If I can find my membership number :-\, and you're still watching this post (and I'm not breaking the terms of access at AncestryIreland), I'll look him up for you. Let me know...

Btw does anyone know if/where there's a decode for the initials used in Fasti, eg the place where educated?

Hi Kathpak I have found my ggg grandfather John Millar in the Irish Fasti - someone at the Linen Library kindly looked him up for me. 'John Millar was born in Glasgow, educated Glasgow and Associate(A. B.) Theological Halls.Licenced Consitutional Presbyterian 1819, ordained by Synod of Protest 1825, Toberdoney July3 1828, Moderator of O.S. Synod 1851, married daughter of Charles Lyle, Carncoggy, Dervock, joined, with a section of his congregation, Free Church of Scotland 1852, deprived of church buildings 1855, removed to Benvarden, died 1862'. I have so far been unable to find out anymore about him in Scotland. Thanks for your interest.
