Title: fiche reader for sale
Post by: jaq on Thursday 22 April 04 14:33 BST (UK)
i applied to help transcribe the National Burial Index......but need a second hand fiche reader available in the Essex area.
i have no idea how much to pay or what they are worth, advise please.

ps.
i recieved this info from the ESSEX co-ordinator about the next release:
"Thanks for the offer of help.  The second edition of the NBI, due out in August, will have around 473,000 fully checked records covering all parts of the county.  We have another 10-12,000 ready for the 3rd edition!

At this time, my main need is for people to help with checking.  We have another quarter of million entries input but not checked.  The dates are mainly pre 1700 so there is a need to be able to read older handwriting.  We work from fiche so you would need access to a fiche reader.   It is then a case of reading the entry on the fiche and checking it against an easy to ready printout and marking any errors in a red pen.  Very little new input is being undertaken whilst the backlog of checking is cleared."

Hi Jaq,

I bought mine from Crosstrading in Huntingdonshire.

I paid £65 as it was a bit big and battered. But usually they are around £95 mark.

You could try garages, banks, building societies. I tried this before I got mine had no luck, but I think you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

e bay sometimes have them, but again prices sometimes are high plus a lot of p&p.

Whereabouts in Essex are you.

Hi jaq,

Do what I did, approach any manufacturing industry or store/warehouse complex in your area.

These type of businesses used readers for stock control, this is now done by computer and the readers are placed in store themselves and forgotten.

I managed to get hold of a relatively new reader and it cost me nothing, they were glad to get rid of it.

Cheers
Geoff

Hmm I wonder where you all buy your fiche readers from.  My first I paid 11 quid for and it printed and my latest one i paid let me think .....nothing for cos I bought 2 at same time and sold one for the cost of two.  Look on ebay they average about 40 quid for second hand ones.  Hand held go for 9.99 on there and ata recent fair these were selling for 90 pounds figure that out

Hi Rob,

Are the hand held ones any good.

Mine is rather big and I haven't really got the space for it.

I could do with a hand held but don't want to pay too much.

I have tried on e bay but not had any success, although that was a couple of months back.

Cheers Diane

Dianne,

The one I tested seemed to work ok but I only tested it on one part of a film so I have no idea how it would work scanning lots of film.  If you really want one try Ebay now there is one due to finish in 48 hours ( I think) and its only at a fiver and no its not me lol

From previous experience with ebay most of the fiche readers are obsolete, id much rather buy one from a dealer that comes with a warranty, I found this site www.microfichereader.co.uk they sell new and used machines with 30% discount and you can buy on-line a great present to keep the Mrs happy for a while!!!! :)
