Please could I request a lookup in the 1851 and 1861 Cumberland census for Elizabeth Hayston (Haysting?) born about 1845.
She married John Whitaker in 1869 in Workington, spinster aged 24; her father was John Hayston (deceased), miner.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Mike,
The one I can see is 10 years older :P
Do you know her birthplace from later census returns? ???
-
Hi Tati -
Please note my correction to this post: I am looking for 1851 and 1861 censuses, please.
In the 1871 census Elizabeth (nee Hayston), aged 26, is recorded with John Whittaker, aged 24, (surname spelt with 'tt' this time) and has a son William John, aged 3. Her place of birth is given as Little Clifton, Cumberland (which is half-way between Workington and Cockermouth).
John Whittaker probably died in 1st qtr 1874, aged 26, and in 1880 she remarried to John Clark, a miller, in Workington. They appear in the 1881 census, Workington, as Elizabeth Clark, 35, (place of birth given as Workington) and John Clark, 46, with children from her first marriage - William J Whittaker aged 12, George Whittaker aged 8 (my g.grandfather), and [Mary] Elizabeth Whittaker aged 4 (birth 1st qtr 1877 - father unknown*). They also have twins, Alfred and Louisa Clark, aged 2 months.
*[Mary] Elizabeth Whittaker's birth certificate in 1877 gives her mother as Elizabeth Whittaker formerly Hastings, at Union Workhouse, Cockermouth.
I am interested in finding Elizabeth Hayston / Hastings background. I have found a BMD reference to a birth: Elizabeth Hayston 1st qtr 1843, Cockermouth, 25/81 - but don't know if this is her.

I just can't see a match :( Wondering if she's hiding under a stepfather's name :-\
Help, someone !! :P :) :) :)
There is one Elizabeth Hayton born Maryport, daughter of Joseph and Sarah ... Not sure how we could tell if she's the one or not :-\
I take it you don't have her marriage cert/s ?
-
Elizabeth HAYSTON appears on the IGI as bap 3 May 1843, Great and Little Clifton, dau of Mary ...
I would guess there never was a John HAYSTON alive or dead.
Tati - I assumed from the first post that Mike had a marriage cert ;)
-
:-X :-X ::) Sorry ! ;D
Geoff - did you see a marriage for Mary by any chance ?
-
Hi Mike .... this is the only one I can find in 1851 ...... wonder if she could have been Isabella ?- or Elenor born Clifton ? ...... this family looks so right to me .... but it's wrong !! all born in Cumberland ..... around Workington and Cockermouth :P :P

Not on the IGI ...
this on FreeBMD
Marriages Sep 1843
GRAVE Ritson Cockermouth 25 59
HALL Mary Ann Cockermouth 25 59
HAYSTON Mary Ann Cockermouth 25 59
LIGHTBODY Hugh Cockermouth 25 59

ROBINSON Elizabeth Cockermouth 25 59
ROCHFORD Margaret Cockermouth 25 59
ROCHFORD Margaret Cockermouth 25 59
WILKINSON Henry Cockermouth 25 59
I suspect this one married Hugh LIGHTBODY (mariner, away at sea in 1851?) ... as eldest child was 6 in 1851 ...no Elizabeth there though.
I suspect that Mary Ann is a different person anyway.

Hi Annie,

Yes, I have a marriage cert :
8 Dec 1869, Parish church, Workington
John Whitaker 23, bachelor, labourer, resident in Workington, father William Whitaker (decd.) Stone mason;
Elizabeth Hayston 24, spinster - resident in Workington, father John Hayston (decd.) miner.
I also have her second marriage to John Clark, 11 April 1880, in Workington parish church, in which she is aged 35, widow, father John Hasting, collier.
In the 1871 census, Udale Street, Workington, Elizabeth aged 26 is recorded with John Whittacker [sic] and family, giving her place of birth as Little Clifton Cumberland.
The 1851 census entry that Liverpool Annie has suggested, also Udale Street, Workington, the entry appears -
Mary Hayston head widow, 39, farm labourer, born Cumberland Branthwaite
Isabella Hayston, dau, un, 22, charwoman, do. Greysouthern
Maria Hayston, dau, - 10 - do. Clifton
Jane Hayston, dau, - , 8, - do. Greysouthern
Isabella Hayston, dau, - , 6, - do. Crop Barrow [sic]
Elenor Hayston, dau, - , 4, - do. Clifton
Matilda Hayston,dau, - , 6 months, - do. Workington.
Question: How could Maria have two daughters both named Isabella - one born when she was about 18, abd the other when she was about 33 ? Is the second Isabella an enumeration error - really my Elizabeth (b. about 1845)??
So why is the only birth entry I can find in 1843?
I have been encouraged, however, to find an 1869 map which shows 'Crossbarrow' within a stones-throw of Little Clifton - so this seems to be possible for Isabella/Elizabeth Hayston.
Any more thoughts would be much appreciated.
I have not been able to find any relevant record in the 1861 census for the Haystons - so any help here would also be welcomed, please. :-\

Isabella HAYSTON bap 12 Feb 1826 Gt and Little Clifton, dau of Mary
James bap 3 Oct 1830 same place, son of Mary
Fletcher bap 30 Sept 1832, son of Mary
One has to wonder exactly when Mary became a widow ::)
-
It's just one big 'if'!! ::)
Which begs the question, was Eleanor the Mother of Mary?
Regards, Emma ;)
-
Nice job Emma ..... see I knew you would do it !! :)
Would Eleanor be Mary's mother-in-law ?? :-\
And why did all the boys disappear and leave all the girls in 1851 !!
I'm trying to think what was happening then ! :-\
-
Wow !! Thanks to you all.
I'm astounded that you have made such a lot of progress in so little time ... I have been struggling with this for years! :)
It all sounds very plausible - and I especially like the link with Fletcher Hayston bap 1832. This is an unusual first name (possibly a surname link somewhere?) yet I know that Elizabeth Hayston and John Whittaker named one of their sons Joseph Fletcher Whittaker (b.1870), and in the 1881 census Elizabeth (re-married to John Clark) has a Fletcher Flood, nephew, aged 18, living with them.
I am convinced that the 1861 census Eliza Hastings, aged 16, born in Crossbarrow, is the same as Isabella Hayston, aged 6 in 1851 born in 'Crop Barrow' .. and the same as my Elizabeth Hayston, born about 1843 in Little Clifton (near Crossbarrow).
I'm a bit confused about why Mary Hayston is a widow in 1851 - but appears to have more children in 1861.... :-\
... and where were all the male members of the family? Perhaps they were mariners, away at sea or something - there was a lot of that around there??
Well, I have had plenty of answers for one day - even if they just raise more questions.
Many thanks for your help Emma, Geoff and Annie.

You think this maybe your John .... Mike ?? ...... wonder if they were just separated ?

Annie :) :)
PS Wonder if Mary was Mary Fletcher ?? :-\
-
Annie -
I'm not at all sure about John Hastons death ...
but yes, I think she might have been Elizabeth Fletcher - and there are a number of possible baptisms on IGI which are around the right date and in the right area.
I just don't know which is right!
Mike
-
Hi Mike !
Well the birth date was about right for John Hayston..... and he died BEFORE the wedding in 1869 !! :)
I wish I could come up with a reason all the men folk were gone ........... too early for the Crimean War ........
the boys could be working down the mine that night .... maybe there was a census done at the mine .... if we could find out which one :) ....
maybe John was hurt ..... maybe an accident .............. easier for Mary to say she was a widow !!
Like you said .... too many questions !! :)
Annie :)
-
You think this maybe your John .... Mike ?? ...... wonder if they were just separated ?
... separated before 1826 presumably, as none of the baptisms gives a father's name. ;)
-
Just in case you might be interested in the mines ........... ::)
The mineral productions are very valuable, including coal, lead, silver, iron, copper, and plumbago, and afford work to a large number of hands. Limestone is burnt in large quantities for exportation. There are 28 collieries in the county, of which 12 are near Maryport, 8 near Workington, and 4 near Whitehaven. There are also 2 near Wigton, 1 at Aspatria, and 1 at Harrington At Whitehaven the principal entrance to the mines is by a long passage hewn in the rock, at the foot of a hill, with galleries intersecting it. The King-pit, the deepest in the mine, runs under the sea to a depth of 960 feet, the water above being deep enough to allow a passage to ships of a considerable size. At Workington the pits are not so deep, being usually from 240 to 500 feet.
Iron-ore is also very plentiful near Whitehaven. There are 18 mines in the vicinity; the most noted being Crowgarth, near Egremont, where the band of ore lies at the depth of about 70, feet, and is from 24 to 25 feet thick. This mine supplies the Carron Foundry in Scotland. Near Alston there are more than 40 lead-mines, most of them belong to Greenwich Hospital, to which they were granted on the attainder and execution of their former owner, the Earl of Derwentwater, in 1716. Lead has been also discovered between Saddleback and Skiddaw, at Newlands and Thornthwaite, and near Buttermere.

Just a short postscript that completes the loop: Fletcher Flood was baptised in 1863 (source: IGI) - father was a James Flood and Maria. 1871 census in Whitehaven shows Fletcher and James Flood b. in Ireland 1835, but no mother present. I have found a marriage for James Flood in Whitehaven, 1860 - to guess who? - Maria Hayston (Elizabeth's sister b.1841).
In conclusion - I feel very confident this is the right Hayston family.
Where was Maria Flood in 1871 ? - not sure, but I have found a Maria Flood, b. 1841 in Workington, in the 1871 census in Lorton (near Cockermouth) lodging with with Ann Hastings b. about 1807 in the Isle of Man. Could Ann be a sister (-in-law ) of Mary Hayston?

There's an Ann HASTINGS 1801 on IGI - mother Elinor ... did you ask who the Eleanor aged 70 in 1841 was?
I haven't mentioned it thus far, but I had an ancestor called Isabella HAYSTON (bap 1779) who was one of the Harrington HAYSTONs. I'm not aware of any connection, but note that Isabella was a name that your lot used too. :)
-
Geoff - that's very interesting.
I have not looked closely at Eleanor Hayston aged 70 in 1841; but have noticed that there is one Elenor Hayston on IGI bapt 20 Jun 1773 in St Nicholas, Whitehaven, parents John Hayston and Isabella. A parent search on IGI finds a couple more with the same parents names but further north in Aspatria and Alston - so probably not related.
I would be interested in more info on your Isabella Hayston bap 1779, please. Harrington is very near so seems a possible connection.
I am planning to visit Cumbria in February (fortunately, I have living relatives in Ravenglass) - so a trip to the archives in Whitehaven is a must!

Her parents were William HAYSTON and Ann GLAISTER who married at Harrington in 1772.
There seem to be no HAYSTON "events" in Harrington before 1766. I had considered that they could have been connected to the HAYSTONs who were in Workington in the earlier 1700s but have yet to prove a link.

Hello Everyone !
I've recently discovered I'm descended from the Hayston family of Harrington, Cumberland.
My 4G grandmother is Ann Hayson, daughter of Wm Hayston & Ann Glaister.
(Ann's older sister is Bella (Isabella) Hayston.)
Wondering if anyone has details on the ancestors of Wm Hayston (b1745?) and Ann Glaister.
Thanks !
