Title: Where is Deptford
Post by: MOM OF TWO on Saturday 23 December 06 19:08 GMT (UK)
Iam trying to trace the Cockerton Surname who may have lived in the Maidstone area.

Is Deptford near to Maidstone?
Found a son George Cockerton birth 24/2/1818 christened 29/3 /1818
With named father George Cockerton &  wife Sarah.

Can anyone look up this family and see if they had a son called Charles as well.

thanks Teresa

Not particularly near, in English terms in those days, but close enough to have moved from one area to the other. In particular, Maidstone is SE of London, and Deptford is SE London, and one can easily imagine people moving from one area to the other.

The A20 leads almost directly from Maidstone to very near Deptford, parts of the route now followed by the modern road were apparently opened as a turnpike in the early part of the 18th century so this would have been the most direct route from Maidstone to London for your rellies.

Deptford is some way from Maidstone! It's SE London, to the NW of Lewisham, West of Greenwich, near New Cross.
True the A20 runs very close, but a long haul if relying on horse and cart.
