many thanks

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat!!
Please could you give their birthdates and place of birth if possible to save a bit of time, lots of Robinsons about.
Also you can look up 1881 census free on www.familysearch.org

Thankyou.  Eliza's birthdate is a problem as she was "born in Spane of british parents" I estimate it to be about 1812 and she was the daughter of William Kelly who resides with her on the 1851 and 1861 census. He was formerly a soldier and latterly a shoemaker.  Robert Robinson was born in Crathorne Yorkshire about 1807.  hope this helps?! :)

Oops, sorry, missed these two off the bottom of that, Eliza's father ?

William Kelly  55  Shoemaker   Y
Thomas Hornsby (bit hard to read)  40  Lab.  N

In 1881 they were at 10 George Street, Stockton, just the two of them, Eliza with a middle name that looks like Ibly, Robert was a Groom & Gardener.

Do you have the 1871 & 1891 details?

Many thanks, yes that's the family, the younger Eliza would have been my great great grandmother I think. Eliza the elder is proving elusive as it is hard to find her birth place in Spain, and there is no mention of her mother on any census, it's possible she died in childbirth I suppose, as William is residing with his daughter on the 1841,and 1851 census.  Eliza senior has Isley as a second name and this is passed on to Eliza (gets confusing as there is a Elizabeth too!!).
I wanted to know who was living with them in 1841 (ie William Kelly) and you have answered that for me.
Kind regards :D

Welcome to RootsChat!

If you post William's military details on the Armed  Forces board, you may find someone will be able to tell you where his regiment was around 1812.

It's interesting that Eliza has the middle name of Isley - on the 1851 census her birthplace is given as "Isley Dlou? , Spain".  (Not sure of the second word)

1871  RG10/4902 fol.79 p.24  11 George St, Stockton
Robert Robinson head mar 64    Green Grocer        Yorks Crathorne
Eliza          "        wife    "     59        "     "  's wife   Spain, British subject
Joseph      "         son   unm  17  Boiler Smith          Durham, Stockton

Looks as if Robert & Eliza may have died by 1891

thanks to all of you for looking, I know William served in the "first regiment of foot" and have done some research and think he may have fought at Corunna, but finding Isley Blou is difficult and I have hit a brick wall with Eliza, her birth and who her mother was, who must have been a very brave lady to follow William to Spain in 1812!!! someone is doing some delving for me in the northeast as he is intrigued by this but so far we havent had much luck, so if anyone out there has any info all would be gratefully received.

The Armed Forces regulars might not see this thread so it's worth a separate post.  It's amazing what they know!

I'm (almost) certain that the capital letter of the second word is a "D" not a "B".  Could the name be a English version of a Spanish name?  Think about how the WW1 soldiers mangled the French names they came across.  That would make it really hard to find the place.  What you need is a Spanish speaker to say the name over and over to see if it starts to make sense.

Good hunting
Monica

Hello,

I see this thread is 14 years old and annabelleH was looking for information about Elizabeth Isley Robinson (nee Kelly). She mentions:- "someone is doing some delving for me in the northeast as he is intrigued by this but so far we haven't had much luck". I'm sure that someone is me!

I haven't been actively looking for sometime now (or even been on RootsChat) but unfortunately I still haven't had any luck!!!  :(

So . . . . annabelleH are you still looking? Have you found anything?

Regards

Stu
