Have you made contact withe a large Patton line in Ireland
Do you know there is a manuscript Patton tree in Vol 25 of in Blackwood Family history manuscript trees in LinenHall library, Belfast.
I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if they think your knowledge relevant and be prepared to pay the extra for post and packing. However if the material is really relevant when you get it, I suggest a further donation to this unique library that is always needing extra funds. Linen Hall Library,17 Donegall Square North, Belfast BT15GB, Northern Ireland, Telephone: +44 (0)28 9032 1707, Fax: +44 (0)28 9043 8586, Email:info[at]linenhall.com.

Thank you so much for another avenue to check out.
Have a great Christmas and may 2008 be kind to you.

My wife is a Clegg, descended from Clegg/Emerson from the Copeland Islands. I may have some information that would interest you - that is provided you revisit this site.

Hi ,
I would be very interested in any information that you may have regarding my paternal line. The name Matear I have since found out is usually spelt Matier. My great grandmother was Sophia Matier married Thomas Patton, lived in Donaghadee.
My eldest uncle William (Willie)- These are my notes in regards to William- William has an inscription on the gravestone of his uncle Richard Emerson, which is in the Copeland Is Graveyard it reads " Also her nephew Wm.Patton who was lost at sea through enemy action in Feb 1942. Safe in the arms of Jesus. At rest".
I eagerly await your reply.
Kind regards and many thanks

I am not very familiar with the Emerson line, more the Clegg line. Richard Clegg, from Copeland Island, was an ancestor of my wife's and he married Esther Emerson. If I find anything I will let you know. Johnny Conn

Hi once again Johnny,
I have connections to both Clegg and Emerson.
My g/grandfather Thomas Patton m Sophia Matier and their children were
David Patton - died train accident Bangor/Dublin train line occ train driver
Eliza Patton - married Richard Archer CLEGG
Anne Patton - married James EMERSON
William Patton - my grandfather m Mary Elizabeth McNEILL
My great aunt Eliza (Lizzie) Patton married Richard Archer Clegg born c1897, they were married 19 Sept 1923 in Donaghadee and had two children Archer Clegg and Betty Clegg. When Richard died Lizzie emigrated to New Zealand with the children.
Anne Patton c1896, Lizzies sister married James Emerson, they had a daughter Winifred. Anne emigrated to NZ with Winifred after the death of James and she was cremated and interred with my grandparents at Andersons Bay cemetery, Dunedin.
I have a photo of James with Anne and Winifred. Winifred would be about 4yrs old
I am originally NZ born but have lived in Aust for the last 20 years. My g/grandfather Thomas and his brother emigrated to NZ followed by my grandfather.

Leonie ... a picture of the Wm Patton stone on Copeland Island, looks to be erected by Annie Emerson (nee Patton). Also picture of graveyard.

Thank you so very very much. A family member had told me what was written on the headstone but I had never seen a pic of it. Makes me all the more determined to try and visit Down. The cemetery is so picturesque. Much appreciated - Leonie

hi there, I hope you are still active.
I have been speaking to my maternal auntie and she was telling me stories of Henry. If you are still active please.
My granny was ELizabeth Ambrozine Melville (Clegg). Her mother was Ellen Clegg (Emerson) and her father was David Clegg.
Henry was my granny's brother who went to America

Regarding Pattons and Donaghadee, probably related to the Pattons of Ballyvester. James Craig, grandfather of the 1st Lord Craigavon, worked for James Patton, who married Agnes Veacock. James Craig improved his station by marrying her sister, Alice Veacock some time 1810s. Would need to check the book again, Craigavon: Ulsterman by St. John Ervine.
One James Patton was witness in 1858 at the wedding (civil record (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1858/09545/5460434.pdf)) of their son, James Craig (millionaire Whisky distiller, father of the future Lord Craigavon) to Eleanor Gilmore Brown.
New Zealand connection too - the daughter of the elder James Craig and Alice Veacock, daughter Alice Craig married Samuel Fergie (1864, record (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1864/11608/8272953.pdf)) and the couple emigrated to New Zealand. Alice died in NZ in 1905 (grave (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/241645757/alice-fergie)). Samuel Fergie returned to Donaghadee in his last years , dying with Lizzie Patton present (record (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1919/05140/4416184.pdf)).
Alice's sister Eliza Jane married Hutchinson Waugh - their youngest child born 1873 (record (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1873/03177/2165407.pdf)) was named Alexander Patton Waugh.
I hope this is of interest or useful to those looking up the Patton family around Donaghadee and links to the Craigs.
