CAN ANYONE LOCATE JANE PORRITT BORN C 1780 OF BURNISTON, SCARBOROUGH ON 1841 OR 1851 CENSUS?? I BELIEVE FAMILY MAY HAVE MOVED TO HECKMONDWIKE OR LIVERSEDGE WEST YORKSHIRE IN 1830'S. THEY ORIGINALLY CAME FROM SCARBOROUGH AREA.
ANY HELP APPRECIATED.
-
Do you have the names of other members of her family, husband, children etc?
Kath
-
No I don't have any further details. I believe she may be widowed by 1851.
My GGG grandfather was born in Burniston but married in 1830 in Liversedge, West Yorkshire. I can find no trace of his birth/baptism or his parents/siblings.
I was contacted by someone on another website who has similar ancestors to me and she told me about Jane Porritt on 1851 census living in Heckmondwike but born Burniston. I cannot find the entry searching ancestry.co.uk.
Thanks.
-
Hi,
The entry on ancestry is transcribed as Jane Porrett, born c1782, in Brunslow, the ref is:
H0107/2323, Folio 411, Page 37.
Jane is a widow and a schoolmistress. I will try and find her on the 1841.

Hi Kath
Many thanks for that. I have just had a look at the census page and I think it says Burniston on the actual transcript.
I cannot find her on the 1871 census but I have found a death in 1859 so I will send for the death certificate.
If you could find her on the 1841 census that would be fantastic as it might give husbands name.
Any information gratefully appreciated.

The one Isobelruss has posted looks favourite to me, there are others on the 1841, but they can be found in 1851, except one, but she is listed as 65, so a little older than your Jane and she is living on her own, so there are no clues to be got anyway :P
The death cert, will hopefully have under the occupation "widow of ??" and will help you in your quest.
Have a lovely Christmas.

Many thanks to all who have helped me so far.
I have made contact with a relative of Francis Porritt born c1775 via Genes Reunited and discovered he did not die until 1862 so it would seem the entry for the 1841 census is not the right one. Either that or Jane was not a widow at 1851 census.
I am really stuck on this one and any further help or advice would be appreciated.

Hi Isobel, thanks for your last two posts.
I feel that my original post has become somewhat confusing so perhaps I should start at the beginning.
I have traced my family back to my GGGG grandfather Samuel Porritt born c1809. I have been unable to confirm his birth and hence find details of his parents. I do have his death certificate which confirms he was born c1809/1810. The only clues as to where he was born come from the 1851 census which states place of birth Bariston and the 1861 census which state Scarboro'. There is no such place as Bariston but I have found Burniston which is north of Scarboro.
Samuel married in 1830 in Liversedge, West Yorkshire. On the 1841 census they are living in Beeston (near Leeds) and by 1851 census they have moved to Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire where they remained until his death in 1861 aged 51.
I am trying to find possible entries on the 1841/1851 census for his parents or siblings.
The entry on the 1841 census for a Jane Porritt was mentioned to me on a post on another website as it states on the census that she was also born in Bariston. She is aged 59 at 1841 so is old enough to be his mother or possibly his sister?? It states she is widowed so no help re possible father.
Samuel's first child (assumed as first per 1841 census) was born 1832 and christened Michael. Possibly fathers name??
Also, at his wedding one of the witnesses was a Thomas Porritt. Father or brother perhaps??
Hope I haven't confused you further.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. I have been stuck on this for months and I am determined to solve the mystery.
Many Thanks
Helen

Hi all.
Still stuck on this one.
Can anyone find Jane Porritt on 1861 census?? She should be in her late seventies if still alive.
I have now sent for three death certificates between 1851 and 1861 and all are wrong Jane Porritt.
At 1851 she was living in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire but may have moved back to East Coast area at time of death.
Many thanks

Hi
I have been reading your posts re Porritts, I went to school with girls of that surname and it is a very well known name in this area of Yorkshire/Cleveland, do you think his mum may have stayed on the coast and not gone to WRY?
Will have a look

Lillian66 I am sorry to bring up a older post however i have traced my Samuel Porritt back as well to my GGGG Grandpa i seen you said you had his Death Certificate. I was wandering how you came about it, or if you would be willing to share?
Thanks,

Hi Tyler
How are you descended from Samuel Porritt. I am a descendant of his son Noble Porritt.
If you send me a private message with your email I can send you a copy of his death certificate.

Hi Helen,
Did you ever resolve this?
Kath

Thank you for letting me know!

Hi Kath
No I never resolved the mystery of Jane on the 1841 or 1851 census.

Hi Tyler
I will scan and email a copy of Samuel's death certificate at the weekend. Would you like a copy of his marriage certificate too??
I have been unable to go back any further than Samuel with certainty although I do have some possible suggestions for his parents/siblings.
I have researched all of his children including Michael so just ask if you want to know any more

Lillian66,
I would appreciate anything you have on him that could help both of us solve this mystery.
I have no concrete evidence of this but I
believe that Thomas and Jane(Noble)Porritt are the parents of Samuel. There was a gap in between Thomas and Thomasine in their family. I could be wrong but some others I have talked to agree with the conclusion. Altho I would rather have evidence.

Did he marry Mary Parkinson in 1830?

Have you found her baptism? - could it be that Michael was her father's name

Hi Tyler
Yes I too believe Samuel's parents were Thomas and Jane (Noble). I have details of their marriage.
I have been unable to trace their son Thomas on any census returns and did wonder if Samuel may have changed his name.
All the other children seem to have moved to the Heckmondwike area around the same time as Samuel and I have traced them on census returns etc. I also have deaths in this area for Thomas and Jane.
Ironically, I live in Heckmondwike!!!
Will did out my files at the weekend.
Do you have any photos of Michael Porritt?? Or any details of when and how he travelled to America?? Also, did he fight in the Civil War??
Thanks
Helen

Helen,
I have no pictures yet. My dad's family don't get together to much so I have to call and talk with them to find it.
As far as Michael the only thing for immigration that I see is from 1864 in St Clair county Illinois. I'm guessing he fought in the civil war because all I have is a pension paper that Mary signed after he died.
