Does anyone have a book on the subject (Surrey Photographers) ?
I'm particularly interested in CROYDON ones, especially a Mr & Mrs Ward, West Croydon, est. 1851. I would like to know when they stopped trading.
Edward AYLING , 172 Handcroft Road, Croydon. Would like to know his trading dates.
I've searched the web but with no luck also Historical Directories with limited success. The information is going to help with dating photographs,

Have you tried Croydon Local Studies Library as to whether they have any info? http://www.croydononline.org/history/places/lslibrary.asp - there's an e-mail address on that page.
or
Croydon Natural History & Scientific Society - http://www.greig51.freeserve.co.uk/cnhss/directry.htm - they have produced a number of historic photos books, so may be very well tuned in to this kind of thing.

Thanks Julian, I'll give those a try,

Hi Jane :)
I have just come across this website, not sure how good the info is but it looks promising, and I thought it might help you :D

Thanks Prue,
Yes, I had seen that site & it's excellent for dating photographs but only has a bibliography for Surrey photographers. I was hoping for some instant on-line information as I'm not in the UK :(
Thanks again,

This might be worth a try:

;) Ahhhh, that's a GOOD one, thanks Colin. Although it didn't have WARD or AYLING in Croydon, it's gone straight into my favourites ;)
You're going to make a fantastic Rootschatter Colin 8)

Hi Jane :)
Could this be Mr Ward, in the 1878 Post Office directory of Surrey?
Ward, Henry. Photographic Artist. Station Rd, Croydon and 54 Brixton Rd, SW.
Have you looked at the census yet, to see if you can spot them?

...Edward Ayling shows up in Kelly's 1891 Surrey directory, at 11 Derby Road, Croydon :)
-
and in 1881 he's at 172 Handcroft Road, Croydon (from 1881 census). So sometime between 1881 and 1891 he stopped trading at Handcroft Road.
-
1871 the only Edward Ayling I can see, right age and birthplace, is a bricklayer in Ewell, Surrey (his birthplace). could be him pre-photographic career?
-
You have been a busy little bee Prue, many thanks :)
I had had a quick look through the census but didn't really get stuck into it.
Yes, that looks like the right WARD photographer as the photographs have 'West Croydon opposite the station' written on it & the family seemed to like going there as the album contains much work from the WARD studios.
This Edward AYLING looks to be doing work at the cheaper end of the business as his work has that look about it ::) I had also found a photo that placed him in Cherry Orchard Rd, Croydon so he moved about quite a bit.
Anyway, many thanks for your active interest, it's certainly narrowed down the time-frame,

Hi Jane
I know the posts I am replying to are quite old but if you are still interested in the Wards I can help. Henry Ward (junior) was my GG grandfather. What would you like to know about them?

Hi Bill.
Yes, this is an old post :) I was dating some old family photographs back then & they seemed to favour Ward studio in Croydon so my interest was mainly to do with that.
Thanks for your kind offer though :)
