Title: Finally found my roots!!!!
Post by: julia.julibob on Sunday 17 December 06 12:54 GMT (UK)
After a year of searching endlessly for Maud Amos and Matthew Golby (my maternal great grandparents) on census returns, I posted a poor birth Cert for their son elsewhere on the site, as I couldnt understand some of it! Someone there finally found them for me on the 1901 census living in Surrey as Maud Gobey (Licensed Hawker) and Mathew Gobey (Basket Maker at home)!!! I was so delighted, and would not believe that I had romany roots until I had hard proof.

I am delighted to say that by finding them on the 1901 census, I have traced the family back to 3 generations of travellers, living in tents and caravans, and now also have the surnames Beasley and Braziel and Aldridge, who were also in the professions. They travelled between, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Cornwall.

A huge thanks to all those on here who have helped me in my quest and allowed me to find my Romany/Traveller roots.  :) ;D

I now have a lot more searching to do as many of them seem to disappear from census's.

Happy Christmas all!!!!

Julia

I was so delighted, and would not believe that I had romany roots until I had hard proof.

I remember that feeling well seeing as I only found mine earlier this year, also with help from the people on here.  Although looking back it made much sense of some of the family history we knew  :)

BIG Congratulations and a very happy Christmas to you and yours also  :)

p.s.  Good luck with the census tracing.  Mine don't appear to be on all of them either  ::)

I am chuffed to bits for you - especially as I have received full stop and dead ends whilst looking for my great, great grandparents, all who originated in the Emerald Isle and were from travelling families!??  Oh well, I will just keep plodding and chipping away....hopefully, one day soon, I will also be rejoicing on this site like yourself.  Well done - its great when just one small piece connects and opens up loads more clues and findings.....I can only pray that this happens to me.

Hi Julia,
Not sure if we have been in contact before either on here or another site?
I have traced my Golbys back to William and Susannah 1750s - they are the grandparents of Henry who married Caroline Beasley/Foreman. Just wondered if you wanted to share any info?
I have been going down the Surrey/Hampshire branch recently so have accumulated various records - which of course you may already have. They are difficult to find at times aren't they!
all the best,
Anne  :)

Hi Julia, after googling found your post here on Roots...I believe it possible (she hopes) that my Maternal Grandfather could be related somewhere along the line..the story goes a Relative passed information to me very many years ago concerning my Henry John Golby/Smith born about 1901 he changed his name from Golby to Smith so he could enlist during the 1st World War she also mentioned that she had his original Birth Certificate and he was definitely a Golby obviously I have tried and tried again to contact this person to try and obtain a copy of this said Birth Certificate but she does not want to be found...he is a bit of a mystery man indeed, sometimes known as Harry and leaving the John out..I do have his Marriage Certificate  and Death Certificate and his 2 Marriage's..I believe he was born in Dorking 14th March 1901 but cannot be sure..according to the Birth Certificate I have his parents were Harry Smith and Lucy Proudley..still no way of knowing if this is the correct one...this relative of mine did say many years ago there were many with the Surname Golby residing in Kent..I do have Henry/Harry Golby/Smith in 1911 Medhurst Row Edenbridge Kent..his three children were born in Claypits Kent..then by 1932 he was residing in Warlingham Surrey.  I have Lucy's  other Marriage to Emmanuel Golby "Mannaville"
1874–1927 in 1892 North Holmwood Dorking
BIRTH 1874 2Q • Dorking, Surrey, England
DEATH 21ST AUGUST 1927 • Hampshire, England
husband of great-grandmother

Emmanuel Golby "Mannaville" Parents I believe were Henry Golby and Caroline Foreman Beasley in 1871 Tunbridge.. am I seriously barking up the wrong branch...

Hoping this message reaches you Julia

Hi Dottie,

Your great x3 grandfather and my great x3 grandfather were brothers. I have been trying to work out the Henry/Caroline line and there are lots of name changes as far as I can tell - more than in other branches of the Golbys.

I see that you say that you have Lucy's 'other' marriage - I actually think that Emmanuel on the register/marriage cert is Henry/Harry. Manniville (who was probably actually Emmanuel) seems to have married Annie Chapman - or at least has children by her even if they did not marry. Manniville/Emmanuel did not die till 1927 so there is no reason for Lucy to marry his brother.

I have managed to find quite a lot from parish registers, GRO indexes, censuses, gravestones etc. - far more than I can put on here. If you would like to see any of it let me know. I'm not sure how we can share email addresses - I don't think they are posted on here??

Let me know what you think.
hth, Anne  :)
