I'm trying to find more out about Francis Edgar, (apparently born around 1865) who married Jane McPhail (nee Leggat) free BMD March quarter 1898, Whitehaven CUL
I couldn't find a birth record for Francis (IGI) and the only 1881 census record doesn't fit, place wise.
An internet 1901 census search revealed these results:
Francis Edgar 35 b. Jersey Carlisle; census place: Cumberland Carlisle Caldewgate // Railway Engine Fitter
Jane Edgar 36 b. Scotland ; census place: Cumberland Carlisle Caldewgate
Does anyone have the 1901 census to find out their address and who else is in the household? I'm guessing that the following children are but I can't be sure:
Jane Edgar 8 b. Scotland;census place: Cumberland Carlisle Caldewgate
Alice Edgar 6 b. Scotland; census place: Cumberland Carlisle Caldewgate
Albert Edgar 2 b. Cumberland, Workington; census place: Cumberland Carlisle Caldewgate
Much thanks,
ard

Yes, those children are in the household. The address looks like 11 Cumberland St. to me.
-
Wow, that was quicker than quick. THank you.
Are they the only 5 people in the household?
I don't know if it is an easy search or not, but the 1901 census revealed several Edgar families in Caldewgate, Carlisle ... so perhaps immediate family lived nearby?
If Cumberland is the county, is Carlisle a parish and Caldewgate a town??

Carlisle is a city, Caldewgate is a township in the parish of Carlisle St. Mary (i.e. part of Carlisle).

Oh. I get it. Sort of. :-\ I think it might be a bit different where I live!
thanks

Hi,
I think the image shows Francis born Jersey, with ChannI written next to it, maybe later in different pen :-\
If that's right then there in the 1881 Channel Islands there is a Frank EDGAR b.1866 St Helier, Jersey, son of Henry A and Amilia. RG11/5610 f.106 p.17.
In 1871 they are here,
RG10/5755 f.122 p.22 St Helier, Jersey

He does call his first son Albert, but maybe that's just coincidence :-\

Yes, I try to cover all bases ;)
Thanks you all... you've been very helpful! I think you've definately found Francis' family. I doubt it's a coincidence that his first son is named Albert. Jane at least is Scottish and her family seems to follow the scottish naming patterns quite religiously (which is always helpful to us researchers!)
cheers and much thanks,
ard
ps I wonder what a chair caner is??? Re: the blind musician cousin

You may find this useful re: the blind musician,

Yup, likely: "Caner / Chair Bottomer Made woven cane chair seats. " Either that or the alternative I thought up: made music by hitting his cane on a chair; sort of like the playing of the spoons....
I'll keep the link to that site (might even give me some ideas of what I want to do "when I grow up"! ;D

I am sorry I cannot be of help as the Edgar in my tree was by a second marriage to my great grandmother's sister, and I don't have much information on the family. They did however have Cumberland connections... if you can determine a likely range for the date of birth George Edgar, that would be helpful to people who may be able to help you.
This is the most recent I have for the Edgar's in my family:
1901 census RG13/4868 Folio 83 page 19 civil parish Caldewgate and Carlisle. Town Carlisle
Address 11 Cumberland Street
Francis Edgar head age 35 Railway Engine Fitter born Jersey (island)
Jane Edgar wife age 36 born Scotland (my ggrandmother's sister, Francis' second wife)
Jane dau age 8 born Scotland
Alice dau age 6 born Scotland
Albert son age 2 born Workington Cumberland
(note Jane and Alice were daughter's from Francis' first wife, also a Jane)
Good luck!

Hi
Thank you for your kind reply, however, Ihave very little to go on as my mam wae only told that George Edgar lived on the Marche & Quey area of Workington befor moveing away with his parents possibly to Scotland but if hes around my Grandmothers age she was born in 1914/15 Ihave travald this root With nothing found. the stolen documents were very unfortunat to say the least realy they were my last hope unles I come across someone who is related or herd of him.
Imust add that George did come back yo marry my Grandmother but my Gr grandfafer sent him away. this is all I have but thank you so much for your reply
