Title: In pursuit of Robert King
Post by: Dee3 on Friday 15 December 06 04:30 GMT (UK)
Still looking for my Gt Uncle who was born in England 1901 and later came to NZ where I believe he married Ella Porter. Unable to find any information as to his arrival or marriage - family story has him running a butter factory but this is very vague.  I have found a couple of records for deaths after some information from Kate-NZ but I need to somehow tie it together.  First one is for Robert King age 81 died 20/6/1981 buried at Purewa Cemetery, Block A Row 13 Plot 100 - can anyone check this for me??  The other is for Ella King age 83 died 24/11/1988 - funeral Directors H Morris, Northcote Auckland, ashes scattered so I guess no follow up here!  How does one go about checking arrivals to NZ after 1918 as I guess he must have been at least 18 when he left England but I could be wrong.

Hi Helen thanks for the reply but I really don't know if this would be connected to my Robert & Ella King, and I'm not sure how to track them.  The only information I have is that my Gt Uncle went to NZ from England and supposedly married Ella Porter- they had aprrox. 5 children and I only know the names of 2 - Pam & Gladys - thanks anyway, Dee

The dates 1981 and 1989 tie in with the death dates you have. The probates are available as they would hve had to go to the courts to settle the estate. The probates I have seen are very useful. They may show the marriage certificate, birth certificate and other exciting finds.
There may be some one who is going to the Auckland Archives who could copy the information for you.
I will check here again before I go.. in case no one has got around to it.

Happy New Year Dee3,

I cannot find a marriage of a Robert KING to an Ella PORTER to 1956.

It strikes me that another way to further your search is to get the birth certificates of either of those children you mentioned which will provide the names of the parents and perhaps also their date of marriage.

The probates will certainly be useful as they will tell you if the individuals are connected by marriage.

Good hunting, riley

Hi Helen, the death dates that I have are ones I stumbled on and I have no information what so ever to back them up - I have been clutching at straws so to speak.  The probates you mention sound very promising - if someone can look up the info for me it would be great.  The only confirmed information I have is that Robert King was born in 1901 in Ongar Essex and his parents were Walter & Ellen King.  Cheers Dee

Hi Riley, can you tell me which records you have checked?  I also have not been able to find a marriage so maybe I have the brides name wrong although a relitave in England has confirmed the name as Ella Porter.  Perhaps they married on a boat going to NZ I just don't know! The suggestion of the birth certificate is great but I don't know when either of the 2 girls was born and I'm not sure how to look up births in NZ - any suggestions?  Thanks Dee

Hi Dee,

I checked the NZSG Marriage Index which goes to 1956. I did find the 1923 marriage of a Robert Archibald KING to an Annie PORTEOUS but thought it a long shot.

I will look for a post-1956 marriage and the births of those children for you next week.

Regards, riley

Hi Dee,

Try this link it is for the Purewa Cemetry website which has the details for your Robert King with regards to burial information.  If it wont work you may have to copy and paste the addy.

You may be able to give them a call and ask for more information?  A work friend of mine went out there recently to look for is father inlaw and they were very helpfull.

Hope this is of some help....

Carol

Hi All, thanks for all the help.  I have come across a marriage for a Robert  King and a ? Porter in W.Ham Essex, 1915 dec qtr 4a/1150.  I am not sure if this is tha answer to my problem as it would only make Robert 15 yrs old and it gives no first name for the spouse.  Thanks Riley for the offer of   to look up the births for me it is very kind of you.  I believe I still have relatives in NZ and would love to be able to find them.  The only names I have are Brian & Maureen - but not even a surname so this is no help.    Thanks also Carol for the offer to check out the Funeral Services perhaps my luck has changed, Cheers Dee

1925 KING Pamela Mavis, folio 1007 (registered at Wellington, March qtr)
1926 KING Pamela Mary, folio 4912 (registered at Christchurch, Sept qtr)

Hi Riley, thanks for the birth information, its much appreciated.  Can you tell me if there is a way to check the parents names for these without having to purchase the certificates?  I was also wondering if anyone could give me information on the passenger lists to NZ - I have not been able to find a year for Roberts arrival in NZ.  I would imagine that he would have arrived in his teens or early 20's and as he was born in 1901 I would guess it would be around 1918-1925,
Cheers Dee

Hi Dee,

To answer your first question, no, sorry. And the same applies for passenger lists, as without knowing the port and approximate date of arrival it's like looking for the proverbial needle. In any case such lists are unindexed as far as i'm aware.

Hi Carol, no unfortunately not the right one.  I rang the directors and they were very helpful - the name of this Ella's husband was an Arthur Robert - she was born in Bramleigh England.  I guess your sisters husband isn't related either.  My Roberts father was Walter and mother was Ellen.  Anyway I'll keep searching, cheers Dee

Hi guys

Excuse me butting in after you have been at it for a while, but just did a bit of "going off on a tangent" re:

I believe I still have relatives in NZ and would love to be able to find them.  The only names I have are Brian & Maureen - but not even a surname so this is no help.

and did a marriage search for Brian King and found the following:

1953
Brian Joseph KING married
Maureen Olive CLEGHORN
Folio ref: 16252

Could this be your couple......?
I'm not sure off hand what the law is regarding supply of certs for people who are still alive.  Although I have a feeling if you can quote chapter and verse (so to speak) that you can get anyones.

Perhaps riley might have more knowledge on this.

This would then give you an idea of where they lived at the time of marriage, and who knows, they may still be in the same area.

Had a quick look on White Pages, there are heaps of BJ King, but no BJ & MO King.

Would even be worth a shot to write to one/several of them and see what you turn up.

Wow Bren, now that's lateral thinking! Certainly looks like them to me.

Yes, Dee should be able to purchase that marriage certificate, there's no onus of proof of relationship.

See this NZ Dept of Internal Affairs webpage for instructions;
http://www.bdm.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Services-Births-Deaths-and-Marriages-Get-a-Birth-Death-Marriage-or-Civil-Union-Certificate?OpenDocument

Happy Hunting Dee, and tell us how you get on if you decide to get the certificate.

Hi, it's been a while since this was originally posted but have you had any luck with your search for Robert and Ella King?

I am 100% sure that they are my paternal grandparents. If you are still looking for this information please let me know :)

Hi Dee

After talking to my Mum I think that it is my Auntie Gladys that you have been in contact with.  I am the daughter of Robert and Ella's youngest son.

Hi Lunaaria,
Yes, I believe that Gladys is the cousin of my father, Basil King, and that Robert King was his uncle.  I have been in contact with Shirley Gladys daughter for some time although we only communicate several times a year.  Which state do you live in or are you in NZ?  Would be nice to share information on the family if you are interested,
regards Dee

Hi Dee

I live in NZ, specifically in Hamilton. Although I grew up not too far from where Robert and Ella lived in Te Puke.
While I personally haven't done any research into the family beyond entering their names into 'google', I certainly am interested in sharing any information that I have with you.
Am I right in guessing that you and your Dad, Basil, are decendants of Robert's brother William?

Lunaaria
