Title: Strawn marriages puzzle
Post by: fairyfeet on Tuesday 12 December 06 16:40 GMT (UK)
I am researching the Strawn family on the Isle of Wight and the marriage certificates of both William Henry Strawn (wife Harriet Richardson) and his father Joseph Strawn (wife Jane Simmonds) omit the name of the wife's father.

William Henry married at St Mary's, West Cowes - 2 June 1878
Joseph married at Parish Church Carsibroke - 2 Sept 1855.

Would appreciate any help in checking these names - think I know from Census returns but would like definite information, also why would they omit their father's names?

I think Harriet's father's name was either Edward or George.  George Richardson married Ann Francis in 1843 on the Isle of Wight and Edward married Elizabeth Francis in 1844 in Northwood.  This would fit Harriet's birth place of Cowes.

So I think it's Edward.

Can't find Joseph  :-\

Why are they missing - maybe the vicar/curate knew there was something less than regular about their births?  Either that or sloppy penmanship.

Thanks Nell

Seems unusual to have both father's missing in different churches at different times.  I will check now on the census and see if I can find a George or Edward.

Just have to ask this - have you checked for a connection with Strachan? This Scottish name is sometimes prounced 'Strawn'.
Cheers

Hi Chasbaz

Have tried these other versions, but there are very few in the south of England.  the other version in Straughan  which is prevalent in Northumberland and Durham.
These Hampshire STrawns are very elusive, and Joseph Strawn the elder is not on the census, or the IGI so it's another question sometime.

Thanks

Hi, i have just started the Strawn side of the family and it is the last side i have to do ! I am finding it a bit difficult, if anyone has any info they could share i would much appreciate it (and i like wise). I have managed to get some............but keep hitting brick walls. I have been spoiled with the Scotlands People website for the scottish side and find the english side far more complicated !

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat.  :)

Does your Strawn family have specific connections to Hampshire, or perhaps another county?  Perhaps you could give some details of your particular brick-walls so that your post can be placed in the best location to get wider notice.  Without any names or dates or details of what you already know, it's difficult to know how best to help.
