My g-grandfather from Malton was named Freer. Has anyone heard of this name before? I had no idea until I started FH research, my mother never mentioned it. Is it a local Yorks name or does it appear elswhere? Any info would be appreciated. Jac :D

Hi Jac,
In my experience Freer has always been either the middle name or surname. The name could also have links to Fryer.
For curiosity I entered it as a Christian name on Ancestry for the following census years:
1841 - 5
1851 - 6 1861 - 10
1871 - 12 1881 - 16
1891 - 14 1901 - 12
On the 1841 returns:
1 living in Yorkshire
2 living in Lincolnshire
1 living in Leicestershire
1 living in Middlesex
Hope this helps a little?
Pels :)

Hi Jac,
I have in my step-sisters tree 2 Freer's as christian names both born at Westow near Malton so it could be local to the North of Yorks.

Thanks Trevor and Pels,
Apparently the name goes back in the family, in 1841,1861 & 1871 it's Frear, in 1881 Freer, in 1891 it's been transcribed as Fred!! and in 1901 it's back to Freer. Admittedly the census transcriptions are a bit suspect & probably no-one really knew how to spell it.

I've got a Joseph WILSON, who m my g-g-aunt in Malton on 04/10/1847. Nothing else known about him except that his father was William Wilson, a stonemason.
Any connection?
Good luck
Colin

Good luck, mawaltho. With such a common surname to research I certainly don't envy you your task.
