I have a marriage cert (24/12/1892 St Jude, mill st, Ancoats Manchester) with a record of the residence of 10 Lion St. I have searched the census for Arthur Beckett and his father James 1891 but nothing - Does anyone know how I could trace the census by address and see if I can find them that way
:-\

Hi,
He is not at 10 Lion Street on the 1891 census. There is a John and Mary Dighton living there.
Sorry,
Mo

Could James have died by 1891? I found an Arthur Beckitt, aged 25, living at 11 Grant Street, Oldham, with his widowed mother Harriett. There were siblings Louisa, Frances & George, also a grandson called James. The family were from Yorkshire.
Just a possibility. Let me know if you want the details.
Alternatively, there's a James Beckett, aged 50, cabinet maker, living at 9 Marple Street, Ancoats. No Arthur present in the household - but there are sons James Edward 15 and a John Albert 10.

How DO you search by address in the censuses?
I thought I could do it in ancestry, but have either forgotten or it does not work the same any more!
Unfestive baa baa humbug smiley!

Hi,
I see from your other post here that Arthur was born 1869,

I wonder if this could be him in 1871, I've written it as the image shows and he is transcribed as BERRY, I just wonder if he got dittoed when the enumerator was told 'she's my sister and he's my grandson' ?

I think Martha was the widow of James as there is this marriage,
Martha BERRY Jun Q 1868 Manchester v.8d p.183
James BECKETT with same details :)
There are quite a few deaths for James BECKETT in Lancashire between 1868-1871 but I think this may be him because of his age and the location.
James BECKETT age:21 Sep Q 1869 Chorlton v.8c p.363
Then there is this marriage,
Martha BECKETT Mar Q 1873 Manchester v.8d p.132
Joseph HAMLET with same details
In 1881 RG11/3898 f.89 p.16 Ardwick, Joseph and Martha HAMLETT are living at 11 Briscoe St, with two children from his previous marriage, Arthur HAMLETT age:11 born Ardwick, and new children.

In 1901 RG13/3677 f.33 p.13 Ardwick, Florence and Edwin HAMLETT are living at no.26 Briscoe St and Arthur BECKETT and family are living next door at no.28.
I think this is the family Welsh Lady asked about, so if it is the right one it looks like he's living next to his half sister :)

James Occupation was a Velvet Finisher and on his sons (arthurs) marr cert in 1892 he is not recorded as deceased.
Arthurs daughter florence may beckett has a reg address on her marr cert as 49 Briscoe st, and Arthurs 1901 address 28 Briscoe
What doesnt add up is that James is not recorded as deceased on Arthurs marr cert 1892 so I think I may have to send off for Arthurs birth cert to see who is the mother..

I'm not sure that marriage certificates always show the father as deceased, even when he is :(
Here are a couple of links about the subject which I found interesting,

I hope the birth certificate helps sort it out :)
