Hello,
My GG Grandfather William Hodson born in Swallow around 1862 ish. Well I think he married a couple of times but cannot locate any marriage records or death records for his first wife ??? First wife was Emma & second was Jane. Can anyone help with marriage dates & maiden names etc ???
Thanks a lot

Hi Ian,
I can see a possible (perhaps!) marriage:
William Hodson to either Elizabeth Doughty or Emma Holmes
Grantham Dec 1886 7a 933
-
sorry - wrong info. :P
-
No problem Tati. If you can find the right info it would be really appreciated.
Thanks
Ian

Oops - the 1st one might still be right...
I initially posted a 2nd marriage which didn't match. :-\

Yes i just found that one as well and looks likely William Hodson to Emma Holmes
Qtr Oct-Dec 1886 Grantham,Lincs.
This fits in with timeframe as their first daughter Maria born 1888(Checked the 1891)
Best Wishes Welsh Lady

Could Emma and Jane be the same person - this also needs Barkwith and Bardney to be transcriptions of the same place :o - as there was a burial.
21 March 1906 Cleethorpes, Jane Emma HODGSON (39). (also the different surname)
Did they have any known contact with Cleethorpes?
I'm never too happy about moving people 50-60 miles to get married just because it fits. If you're stretching things that far, then York is just as close.
Can anyone spot an Emma HOLMES from Bardney on an earlier census?

Geoff,
I am also sceptical of the Grantham marriage. I also don't believe it is right. My family are from Louth which is only 20 miles or so from Swallow. Grantham is too far away.
Perhaps there aren't two wives. On the 1891 census Emma was the wife & in 1901 Jane was the wife. It just so happens that three children appear in 1891.
Born in 1888,1889 & 1890. Then there is a six year gap until 1896 & 1900 ish. My Great Grandmother was the 1896 girl.
I must admit I presumed Emma had died but I may be wrong.
I am revisitng this link after many months of time away from it & for some reason or another I actually have Jane as Jane Stephenson ??? This may be wrong now I look at it again.
Does this help at all ???
Thanks
Ian

Dear all,
Aswell as putting a post here I checked on another genealogy website. One of the contributors on there gave me permission to view his tree because he had William Hodson on his tree. He had William married twice to a Jane Stephenson & Emma Holmes !!!
Just putting some more quandries in there !!!!

Was this person on GR able to find
a) the second marriage
b) Emma's death/burial
as I still can't spot them ???
-
Geoff,
Their information was too sketchy. Only the names & birthplace. No information at all about marriages etc.
I guess I'm coming to a bit of a dead end !!!
Mind you I am still of the mind that there was two marriages which is more than I had when I last looked at this branch of my tree. It would just be nice to fill in these missing gaps.
Mind you I still don't believe that two people from North Lincolnshire would go down to Grantham to get married. Then all the children were born back in North Lincs. Doesn't;t make sense

The 1901 census has Jane as born in East Barkwith c1865, so it is tempting to link her with the Jane Stephenson b1865, East Barkwith in the 1871/1881 censuses. In fact this Jane Stephenson went on to marry Arthur Bown (Dec 1890 Horncastle) and both she and Arthur are alive and kicking in 1891 and 1901.
Is there anything else to link your Jane to the name Stephenson? If not, it looks like a red herring.

Just looking for births, Ernest Robert and Maria appear as HOTSON, George Henry as HODSON.
Perhaps William's birth was reg as HOTSON (Q4 1860 Caistor)
The only Wm HOTSON marriage in the 1880s was to Harriet :( They were together in 1891. I've also looked at HUDSON and HUTSON.
Of course, if Emma and William were married and she had left him, he may not have felt able to have married Jane. Can anyone spot Emma CUMMINGS in 1891?

Hi Ian
On reel 888 St Wulframs parish records Grantham there is a Robert William Hodsons marriage to a Rebecca Storey on June 30th 1886.The Robert was above the William but it was signed R.W.Hodson
Roberts fathers name was George Hodson (maltster) and Rebeccas father was Joseph (Joiner).
Witnesses were George Wind & Mary Ann Hodson.
Could not find Emma Holmes or a Jane married to a Hodson.
