Hi All
Does anyone have access to the 1901 Census for Dundee please? I am looking for James Millar on this census. In advance, apologies as this is a very common Dundee name - but please note the spelling with an 'a'. He was killed with the 4th Black Watch at Loos on the 25th of September 1915. I have not seen the entry, but through a third party I have been told that his death was recorded in the People's Journal and his address was stated as being 7 Kinloch Street, Dundee. However, without seeing this entry I cannot verify this. I don't as yet have his death certificate, so I cannot tell you how old he was.
Some of you may have read my Patrick Crossan thread, James Millar is in the same predicament and has not been recorded by the Commonwealth Wargraves Commission nor is he recorded on the Memorial at Dud Corner near Loos with his comrades.
In advance, Many Thanks with anyone that helps with this matter

::) Hi
Pte James Millar 3763 is mentioned on Dundee's Roll of Honour for the Great war, and there is a close-up (head) photo of James as well as other soldiers who have been mentioned on the Roll of Honour that I can send on to you.

:) Thanks Atom,
Some moving intimations for James Millar from the Dundee Press:
Peoples Journal, February 19th, 1916 – 3763 Pte James Millar reported missing since 25/9/1915.
And:
DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY – Intimations/Notices
People’s Journal, November 18th, 1916
Notice No 1 Miller or Boyd, 3763 Private James Miller officially missing since 25 September, 1915, now presumed to have died of his wounds, 4th Black Watch, beloved brother of Mrs Janet Hutchison & Mrs Foster, 7 Kinloch Street, Dundee
His Heart was always in his home
He toiled and did his best
Until there came that sudden call.
And God called him to rest.
His cheery ways, his smiling face,
Are a pleasure to recall:
There is nothing left to answer
But his photo on the wall.
Notice No 2 Millar or Boyd – 3763 Pte James Millar, 4th Battalion, Black Watch, beloved son of Mrs Boyd, No 7 Kinloch Street, Dundee.
Now a mother’s heart is aching
For a son she loved so well:
He gave his life for his country,
In honour’s cause he fell.
He was a son truly fond
A friend both kind and true;
When days are dark and friends are few,
Dear son, how I long for you.
Had I but got me one last look
Into your loving face,
Or had I only got the chance
To kneel down in that place
To hold your head, dear son,
While your life-blood ebbed away,
My heart would not have so much
The tears I shed to-day.
The heart that mourns sincerely
Mourns silently and low.
- inserted by his sorrowing mother, sisters and brothers.
Hope this is of assistance to anyone that can provide information.

:) Hi Tom
Glad to see that you have 'found' some information on your man James Millar, and it is good to see you managed to get his photo posted for us all to see. He's a smart, good-looking young soldier.
The verses are very sad ... his family must have been devastated back then.

Morning Tom,
James Millar is recorded on the Scottish War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle. Sadly no more information than you already have.
Janet Hutchison, sister of James Miller, married William Hutchison 27th April, 1906 in Dundee. Her address was 24 Kinloch Street, Dundee. Her mother's name was Barbara Miller, with no father recorded.
I see James Millar has been described as "Miller or Boyd". The witness to the above marriage was Mary Boyd. Just wondering if James could have been the son of Mary Miller, sister of Janet, who later married a "Mr. Boyd".??? This raises all sorts of questions which I would imagine only his birth certificate would answer.
You might care to search on Scotlands People now to try and find James Miller's birth.
If you pm. me I will send you a copy of Janet Miller's marriage certificate.
Regards,
Dorothy

Morning again! Just went and had another look and found what I think is your James Miller on the 1901 census.
James is living with his family in the Parish of Rosebank, Dundee (St. Clement) with Wm. Boyd, Head, and mother Barbara Miller, together with the Miller children. Wm. Boyd and Barbara do not appear to be married at this point.
If you pm. me your email address, will forward this to you.
Hope this is the right family :)

Hi
And Many Thanks to all that have contributed with their time & efforts which have assisted in bringing this thread to a very succesful conclusion (Snow Wolf, Dorothy, & Atom),
As you know, James Millar, was never commemorated and is one of the missing of the battle of Loos. He and many of his comrades of the 4th (Dundee) Battalion of the Black Watch died on the 1st day of the battle of Loos in 1915. A battle that is remembered by a lit torch atop the war memorial on the Law in Dundee every 25th of September. Dundee lost 4500 men and each one should be remembered by a grave or monument as laid down in the charter of the Commonwealth Wargraves Commission. Unfortunately, James Millar has been overlooked.
James has no known grave and will soon be added to the addenda panel on the walls of Dud Corner at Loos
Based on the evidence gathered, which includes the contribution you have all made on the forum, I have successfully submitted a case to the Commonwealth Wargraves Commission & the Ministry of Defence. James is now recorded on the CWGC database and will be having his name etched onto the Memorial in due course.

Another one of Dundee's sons is in from the cold.

Hi Tom
That's brilliant that James Millar can now come out of the shadows to be properly commenorated on CWGC as well as being remembered on the Loos memorial at Dud Corner.
May the flame on the Law shine even more brightly this year for your efforts. :) :) :) Well Done.

Well done, Tom. Your hard work has finally
paid off!
I am sure the family will be very proud of this.
