Kia ora from New Zealand,
Searching for information on Jackson Patton/Mary McKelvey who married in June 1853 in Holywood, both aged 21. John Spence and Eliza Paton signed the marriage certificate as witnesses. What connection did John Spence have to the Patton family? I have an Indenture Certificate for John Patton and John Spence signed as guarantor - in 1854.
I understand one son was named Jackson Patton. Did they have any more children? I believe they attended the 1st Presbyterian Church, Holywood.
Jackson Patton was an older brother to my gg grandfather John Patton, sons of William Patton and ??
On the Griffiths Valuation I found a Jackson Patton living at Chapel Hill, Holywood and believe this is the same person. What date range would this valuation cover?
Any information will be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Kiwibev,
The Valuation of 1848-64 was the Primary Valuation. Three notebooks were used.
1. Field Books: Information on the size & quality of a holding
2. House Books: Occupiers name and measurement of any buildings
3. Tenure Books: Annual rent paid and legal basis - whether by lease, or at will, also the year of any lease.
These notebooks also document any changes in occupation between the initial survey and the final published survey.
The valuation office also holds the 'Cancelled' or 'Revision' Land Books and Current Land Books.
The 'Cancelled Land Books' and 'Current Land Books', give details of all changes in the holdings, from the time of the Primary Valuation up to the present day.
The books can be very useful in pinpointing a possible date of death or emigration, or even in identifying a living relative.

Kia ora and good morning or good evening to RosemaryJoan and Christopher,
Thank you both for replying to my posting of November 2006. I really appreciate you both taking the time to offer information.
Thank you Christopher for the information you provided - I will follow up the best I can for more information.
And Rosemary Joan, YES this Jackson is a son of Jackson Patton and I am now busy trying to find descendants of this marriage. We are travelling to Holywood in Aug/Sep this year trying to find living relatives. It is so difficult trying to find information on my Irish ancestors living so far away and not having access to local records etc.
As noted in my Nov06 posting the name of John ( my 2x grt grandy) and Jackson Patton's father was William Patton but I have no idea of their mother's name and would dearly love to find this out. I do not even know when she died.
Any suggestions re what records or where I could look for this information would be greatly appreciated.
I have also just found a sister named Eliza who married David McCutcheon and I am now looking for information on this couple and possible descendants.
Emerald Ancestors - yes I had accessed this site some time ago well before I knew of Jackson and Eliza Patton so I will revisit it and see what I come up with.
I am so looking forward to visiting the land of my Irish ancestors and would really love to meet up with living relatives if at all possible. My 2x great grandy John Patton drowned in NZ in Oct 1871 and left a very young widow with four children under the age of seven, one of them being my great grandpop (whom I never knew) - his widow married twice more - and any information on her first husband was lost over the years. In those early days information on official records in NZ was very basic so I have not been able to find anything from those sources.
I would also like to know where Jackson Patton (1 and 2) are buried - how can I find this information?
Thanks again for your replies which are very much appreciated.

Hello Mary,
BRILLIANT! Thanks soooo much. Now I have another family to track and I hope the chances of finding descendants of these children must be pretty high. I am very excited at the prospect. Now to find marriages and possible children. YEESSSS .... thanks heaps.

These marriages all had David McCutcheon as their father: I know you don't see the father's name in Emerald Ancestors. These are from AncestryIreland.
Margaret, married Robert Hull in 1888 in a Methodist church in Belfast
William married Mary McCready in 1895 in Donaghadee
James married Margaret Gunning in 1894 in Ballygilbert Presbyterian, Bangor.
Good luck,

Hi RosemaryJoan,
Thanks so much for the information on the marriages. Is AncestryIreland a paying site?
I know I am asking heaps of questions here but how can I find out where my Patton ancestors actually lived? I still don't know this information or even where any of them are buried. Can you recommend where I can look. Also can you recommend/advise Irish websites I can access?
Thanks again.

Hello there, Before you spend any more money have a look at this site:
www.failteromhat.com
here you can look at the entries in Griffiths Valuation. Click on '....records of one County', click on Down, click on Holywood Parish and you will see all the Pattons in this Parish. Then look at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/index
You can search under names, places, etc. and see hand drawn maps of townlands contained in Parishes (yours is Holywood). There may even be a photograph of 1st Presbyterian Church and details of the graveyard.
Also look at
www.raymondscountydownwebsite.com
Yes AncestryIreland is a paying site, at £4.50 per single view for non members, £3 for members, but they do give the father's name before you pay so if you are sure, you can see a transcript of the marriage or birth. History from Headstones is an offshoot of this site and there are lots of Patton headstones mentioned, but again a paying site.
Keep asking the questions. We are all hear to help each other.

Hi RosemaryJoan, (lovely name combination).
Thanks again for your advice. We are going away for a week and I will investigate these sites and research the marriages etc when we get back. If I purchase (Irish) death certificates, would they have a last known or informant's residential address on it? I am trying to find out how I can find street addresses. What, if any, certificates would provide that information?

Thanks for the compliment. It is my real name!
Yes it should give the last known address - unless the persons died in hospital then it sometimes gives that. Some of my death details give the address of the person who registered the death. If you don't want to pay for the proper certificate, Family Ulster will email all the details in the registration for about £6.
