I hope someone can help me.
I am trying t trace a Grace Bell Jackson born in the Sth Shields district in 1888.
her father was
William born abt 1837 in Scotland
Isabella 1837
They married in 1888 june in sth shields.
William born abt 1886-7 in Durham.
I have found them on the 1891 census but that is all.
What I would like to know is the family name of Isabella before she married William.
also I was wondering if both parents died before the next census as I cant find them in the 1901 census.
Thanks in anticipation.

Robyn,
Looking at FreeBMD, the only Isabella on the same page as William Jackson, Jun 1888 is:
Isabella ENNIS.

Trini.

The only problem with the marriage is this.
On the 1891, there is a Martha married to a William Jackson, with two children. The baby is 5 mths old and the daughter, 1 year old. Her name is Edith Elder Jackson - which suggests strongly that her father married Martha ELDER in June 1888.
Also, the William and Isabella are both shown as born in Scotland - would that be correct?
Lastly, how do you know that they married in June 1888?

Hi Jan
the William and Isabella are the right ones.
I have narrowed it down to them thru the 1881 census.
I have aslo found that Isabella's maiden name was Ennis - Thru BMD and yes both were born in scotland.
where in scotland i have no idea!
It would help if I could. but getting anything from scotland is really difficult as they dont have free access to anything.
As I dont know which area they are from I cant put in a request in this forum so makes things a bit of a guessing game.
Thanks for your help

OK so the couple in both 1891 and 1901 South Shields census are the right ones. They have two children, Grace Bell born 1888 and William born 1887.
When I posted about William possibly marrying a Martha ELDER, I based it on the following info:
Jun 1888 from freebmd
Martha Elder
Isabella Ennis
James Hughes
William Jackson
In 1891 there is a William born Wellington, Shropshire married to a Martha.
On the 1891, there is a Martha married to a William Jackson, with two children. The baby is 5 mths old and the daughter, 1 year old. Her name is Edith Elder Jackson - which suggests strongly that her father married Martha ELDER in June 1888.
The details from freebmd will give the two couples on each register entry but will not link them together. That's why you can't rely on freebmd to definitely identify the partners in a marriage. Often you can find a couple on the next census, which is why I found William and Martha.
If you can't find the marriage in a parish register, then to confirm whether this William in 1888 married Martha or Isabella, you may have to send for a certificate - this is the only way to be sure that you have the right couple. You can say ' I only want it if the groom is William Jackson and the bride Isabella Ennis', and they usually don't charge full price if it's the wrong partner.
Alternatively - I just had the thought!- you could email the Local Studies library in South Shields and ask if they could find a marriage registered in the JUne quarter of 1888 for a William Jackson and ask for the details. If you ask nicely they are usually very obliging!

Thanks Jan.
I have seen on Freebmd the marriage between william and Isabella.
I was very sure that they were the couple as family stories said that the daughter Grace's middle name was from the mother.
thanks also for your ideas and other contacts. will look into it.
