Title: Scanning Tutorial
Post by: cazza59 on Thursday 23 November 06 01:30 GMT (UK)
Yes, finally..here it is...I've had a devil of a job trying to get it small enough to post so I will have to apologise for the extremely poor quality of the images but it's a perfect example of jpeg compression (you will see what I mean!!).

Anyway, this is just a draft.  It was written mainly in the middle of the night (literally!!) so I apologise for any grammatical errors etc.  Also, I am by no means an expert, it has been a long time since I did "Computing 101"  ;D so it may be technically incorrect...I will leave it to you to correct me.

All feedback is welcome from restorers and users...I have thick skin so will not be offended.

This is about the 4th re-write I've done, as I realised in my earlier efforts that I had lost sight of our target audience and the diverse range of ages and skills base of rootschat users and produced something that was far too technical.  I hope I got it right this time as I have tried to develop a simple, short instruction for the novice.  It is not my intention to provide a crash course in computing as that would defeat the purpose of this exercise.

Please either PM me with feedback or post...hopefully when this is in it's final stage we will be able to get permission to post a bigger file so the images are much clearer.

Brilliant work Cazza

Easy to read and amusing too.  You stopped it from becoming a boring lesson, not easy to do.  Well done.  It must have taken considerable time to get this together, I know that as I sometimes do these kind of things at work.  You have done really well and it is so easy to follow.  Hats off to you.  I do hope they attach this to the top of the board as I think everyone can benefit from it, members and restorers.

Once again, well done

Lones

Wow Cazza  :o  Great Job!!  :D
Well done, that's really fabulous.  I don't think I'd change a thing.  It was succinct, clear and not "heavy" or offputting at all.  I think it should work really well, most people shoudl be able to follow those instructions very easily.  Those who can't follow them can let us know where they are getting stuck (e.g. "I'm stuck on page 10 of Cazza's tutorial!!") and it will then be easier for us to help them.

Thank you so much for doing all this hard work.  I know what it's like to try to fit "favours" and things in around the rest of your life, and really appreciate your effort  :D

Cheers

Hi Cazza  :)

I have had a good read of your guide. it is really very clearly written, without being patronizing to 'newbies' an a really worthwhile excercise.

I do hope that this and your guide can be stickied to the top of this board as essential reading.

Well done  :)

What a great piece of work Cazza......Many Congratulations....

Oh! if only Computer books for 'Dummies' were that clear and concise without the use of Acronyms without explanation as to what they mean, and Jargon, which, to some poor soul trying to gain a little knowledge, means even less.. ;D ;D

I have tried on many occasions to explain the 'joys' of scanning to my Bro'-in-Law and virtually watched his eyes glaze over....with your permission I will print this Tutorial out, give it to him, and if he can't grasp it then, I will tell him to sell his machine.... ;D ;D...

Very Best Regards, Michael.

Of course Cazza....In your generosity you may have made a rod for your own back here..... ;D ;D

The next request I can see being aimed at you is 'How to add text and arrows etc.,' as shown in your Tutorial..... ;D ;D ;)

Regards, Michael.

I must say I'm quite overwhelmed by the response to the tut and would like to say a big thank you to all for your very kind words.  :-*

Michael in response to your question, the tut was created in MS Word.  I inserted the printscreens into the document (there were more but had to remove them due to size restrictions) and then using the drawing toolbar menu in Word, I created text boxes over the printscreens to allow me to type the text.  Next, I  removed the borders from the text boxes.  The arrows were also created from the same drawing toolbar.  I then converted the Word document to a PDF file using very high compression to reduce the size (hence the poor quality of the images).

PS If you would like more detailed instructions, let me know and I will send you a PM.

I know what RGB means...I know what RGB means...Whoops, sorry got carried away!!   ;D ;D ;D  I work with children & have obviously spent too much time with them   :P

Cazza...it's perfect...just one teeny, weeny suggestion, if I may be so bold.  If people get into the habit of attaching a pic BEFORE they write the message, they won't feel like a right Walley as I did myself last week after posting without the pic!!   :-[ :-[ :-[  Just a thought that may help others.  I've saved this wonderful document to my desktop & will certainly be making good use of it & will pass a copy to my daughter too.

It's fantastic...spot on...now, if you'd like to help me with the book I'm attempting to write...   ;D ;D ;D

Best wishes,

Debbie

Hi Cazza and everyone

Great work Cazza, I just scanned the latest addition to my collection of pics and followed the instructions and posted it. Resizing it was a bit guess work and it is a little wider than most but gives me some thing to go on next time.

Thanks again for the above comments (although Indi, I'm not quite ready to give up my day job, the pay and the hours are better LOL  ;D ).  We really hope that this has simplified the process and will encourage more people to have a go at posting photos for restoration, and by all means, ask anyone of the restorers for help.  We are more than happy to oblige.

Hi Michael, I thought I'd give you a quick response on how I did it in case anybody else was interested, I should have said "for those that are interested"   ;D...Offer still stands though to those that would like to know more detail.

Hi LJ

I knew the resizing part would be the most painful bit, but I guess the main point is explaining what we mean by resizing, ie not changing the physical dimensions of the image but the actual saved size of the document to 500kb to allow for posting.  There are a couple of alternatives if anyone is  having problems resizing, as mentioned in the tut 1) you can email the large file to a restorer who can post it on your behalf, or 2) email some printscreens of your software and we will endeavour to tell you where to find it so you can do it yourself.

Hi Marleyman

Thank you for your kind offer, but I see Deadants has also very kindly made my tut a permanent posting at the top of the restorers board, which is probably preferable as with each new posting, your posting will be pushed down the page until it will eventually be lost down the track. But thanks again for the offer.  ;D

Hi Debbie

Glad you found the tut useful.  ;D  I should have also put in the tut that each  and every photo posted must have a unique name as well as being under 500kb.

Now I'm going to get back to doing what I like best...haven't done a restore in days...I'm getting withdrawal symptoms  !!!!!  :P :P :P   ;D ;D ;D ;D

That's Brilliant Cazza  ;D ;D ;D
what a great job & so easy to understand, & the images are so much more helpful to beginners than trying to explain steps in words.

It was very generous of you to spend the time & effort on the project & I'm sure everyone will be thrilled with it, ....

I also downloaded it,  :D :D

Thanks heaps,  Yvonne

Thanks Yvonne  ;D.  I'm just amazed at the response to the tut, it's been terrific.

Hopefully I will get permission to post a less compressed version to get the images a bit clearer, as they say "A picture paints....."   ;D

HI there,

I'm no expert (someone feel free to correct me).  Change the name of what you called the original photo.  I think it means you have given your pic the same name as someone elses on the forum.

Worth a go

Excellent Cazza,

My scanning at 600 was no problem, but I do have a photo that's still too big in size.  Will try and give it a go on the resizing this evening.

Well done indeed 8)

Treelover is correct, you must rename the file you are trying to post, just putting an extra digit or deleting one will suffice
