I'm researching my husband's family but cannot find any trace of his great grandfather in the 1901 census. He was then serving with the Medical Staff Corps and his wife Dora Hague and the children were living in Portsmouth. Had he been in the uk he would surely have turned up in a census somewhere - I'm now wondering if he was serving in South Africa. Can anyone tell me how I could verify this?

Hi,
You would need to look in the documents WO/97 at Kew (National Archives) to see if his papers survived. The WO/97 papers for discharge from 1901 to 1913 are in alphabetical order, whereas previous to this date they were by Regiment.
The other thing to check is the Medal Rolls for South Africa which are WO/100 but these are done by Regiment.

Many thank's for this info Andy. I shall go and browse WO/97 right away.
