Title: Linen weavers and works in Brechin; The Bearn Family
Post by: Walder on Monday 20 November 06 12:42 GMT (UK)
My family all came from Brechin and were in the linen trade .Does anyone know the name of the Linen works and if there are any records of them in Brechin. My family name was Bearn and I have records going back to around 1725 and they all seem to work in the industry My gt grandfather was a flax-weaver and my grandpa was an overseer.
I am also interested in the burial records for brechin as I believe there were two cemeteries there and so family lore goes one of my Grandfathers was the first one buried in the 'new' one
My other local names in Brechin are
Walker
Smith
Mitchell
Silver
Buchanan
Grieg
Gove
Dunn
Weir

Hi Jackie,

The linen works in Brechin were owned by J. & J. Smart (Brechin) Ltd.,
Jute, flax and polypropylene fabric manufacturers.  Angus Archives hold the following relating to the firm.  1838-1968: letter books, ledgers, journal, cash books, order, length, manufacturing and prooduction books, inventories.  Their Email:
angus.archives[at]angus.gov.uk  Their website: http://www.angus.gov.uk/history.
There is a burial ground at Brechin Cathedral and another with an extension.  You would need to contact Angus Council at www.angus.gov.uk/services/default.cfm for details.

Hope this helps,
Bervonian.

A message for Jackie Walder.

I notice you have a surname(Bearn) which appears in my family tree as does Weir. My connection is with John Weir & Agnes Addison.
