Title: RAYNER Marriage in Lincolnshire * Completed *
Post by: conseiller on Sunday 19 November 06 14:40 GMT (UK)
Looking for the marriage of John Rayner believed  born about 1812 in Lincolnshire and Helen (Ellen) Bland born 1816 at Leake in Lincolnshire.

Looking for the birth details of John - when, where and who his parents were?

John and Helen (Ellen) Rayner gave birth to a son John believed born in 1838 in Lincolnshire - who immigrated to the colonies. Have not been able to find his birth details either

Any help appreciated - regards - Luc.

9 Sept 1837 at Boston, John RAYNER (son of John) to Helen BLAND (dau of John)

from the Boston spreadsheet, available here-

http://s10.freefronthost.com/mi/index.html

Ellen's baptism appears to have been 15 Feb 1818 at Leake, dau of John and Phebe.  There appears to be no convenient baptism for John ... unless he "invented" his father (6 May 1814 Holland Fen, illeg son of Elizabeth).

The baptisms were from the International Genealogical Index (IGI) at www.familysearch.org which I'm sure you know about. I know of no other comprehensive list of baptisms, although isolated bits exist eg

I came across your enquiry about John Rayner b 1811 and married to Helen Bland. John and Helen emigrated to New Zealand. According to a published family history which appears to be based on a family bible which contains some errors, John was born 22 Jan 1811 in Waddington. There seem to be no records of Rayners in Waddington but they are in Waddingham. They had a very useful habit of using the wives's surnames as second names in following generations so I am confident in the Waddingham location. The igi have a john born to John and Charlotte who was baptised on 26 Jan 1811. Someone has looked up this record for me and confirms that the mother is Charlotte. However John(senior) married Frances Newcomen in Louth 9 04 1810. The Newcomen name crops up several times in the family tree. There are no references to Charlotte that I have been able to discover. Have you managed to discover any further information about John and the Rayners since your original enquiry? I have some information on John senior's family if you are still looking.

I have just discovered that this John was buried 13 May 1814, Holland Fen, so may be safely discounted.

Hi Luc,

Thanks for your message - I will do another post and then I will be able to reply! The authors of the NZ Rayner history made a conscious decision to go with the family bible material when they encountered conflicting information. They were mainly concerned with recording the family activities in NZ.

Hi Bev711

Just noticed this thread, I am descended from John & Helen Rayner through their daughter Ann Eliza Newcumin (married Manuel Bernard).

I wonder if you remember which ship the Rayners' took to New Zealand and the date they arrived? I don't have a copy of the family history here with me at the moment (while i'm living in OZ).

Are you also descended from the Rayner family?

Cheers,
Anita :)

Hi Anita

According to the history they sailed on the Lady Cornwall, which left Gravesend 7 April 1853 and arrived in Petone 13 August 1853. They are not on the shipping list because they alighted by barque and missed being listed.
I am decended from Ann Eliza Newcumin's sister Harriet Frances.

Cheers
Bev
