Dear Carole, and LL

Thank you both so much.  This info. has been a great help. It has confirmed that Christopher is my 2 xGt. Grandmother's brother and family.

Christopher's sister Mary Ann (nee Achilles) McAuliffe and their mother Mary Ann (nee Fenner) Achilles came to Australia about 1864-66 but the shipping records have been lost in floods about 100 yrs ago.

Their father Augustine Achilles apparently died in 1864 in
Dublin, but so far we are unable to find out his origins.
Someone told me recently there is an Achille Island off the coast of Ireland, but it does seem to be an unusual "Irish" name.  Meanwhile the search goes on. Thanks once again. Cheers Dale.

Hi all - I have just found your posts.  My 3rd gr grandparents was Augustus Achilles and Maryann Fannin/Fenner. My line is through their daughter Mary Ann Achilles who married John McAuliffe. My research seems to say Augustus came from Germany and was in the military, prisoner of war, more military services - Canada, back to Ireland - two wives.  I am hoping to find evidence ofthe German side of this family.

Hi Garstonite, very interesting - I have August Achilles and Mary Halpin etc in my tree, but it is his sister Mary Ann Achilles who is my 2nd gr grandmother.  My Mary Ann was born in 1843 and married John Florence McAuliffe according to records searched so far.  It is her father Augustus Achilles and mother Mary Ann Fannin(?) m in 1835 I would like to pursue.  All I know is Augustus claims his birthplace as Braunschweig (Brunswick) in Germany in about 1785.  Augustus appears to have married Ann Cole in Canada while serving with the military.  That marriage was 1814 in Halifax. They had a son Henry who apparently became a Reverend.  I'd like to find Augustus' parents (Germany) and also where and when he died.

Fascinating story, just been reading about it on Ancestry and on here a general overview of how your ancestor and men of other nationalities, mostly Germans, got involved in the war of 1812 in North America:-

Blue I will have a read of your latest link, but am wondering why you repeated the earlier post?  My Mary Anne McAuliffe nee Achilles died in Queensland - for some reason I can't attach the record, but this is what it says:
Name:  Mary Ann McAuliffe
Date of Death:  13 September 1905
Place of Death:  Queensland
Father's name:  Augustine Ackeless
Mother's name:  Mary Ann Phimnan
Registration Year:  1905
Registration Place:  Qld
Registration No:  002357
Page No. 16630

It appears no-one knew how to spell Achilles or her mother's maiden name - which is hard to read on the marriage registration as well.

Repeated? Do you mean the post where I pointed out that the records mentioned by Garstonite are on Ancestry? This thread was looking at Liverpool records for the family. It may be better to post a new thread in the Europe section if you want to specifically ask for help about their German origins:-

Yes sorry - thought we were looking for our mutual ancestors in general.  No German posts on any Achilles/Achilleas so I have made the first post on the Europe site - see what happens but think it will be slim pickings.
