Title: Confused re Cornforth/South Church parish
Post by: pipj on Saturday 18 November 06 19:41 GMT (UK)
Hope somebody can help - I don't live in the UK so I'm not very good with the geography of Durham.
I've located a Thomas Stockdale c1837 according to the 1851/61 cenus he was born in Cornforth or South Church. I guess these are the same, but according to the details of the church at Cornforth it wasn't built until 1886 so where would he have been most likely christened.
Thanks all

Hello

There is this about South Church which notes it's 'alternative' naming as Auckland St Andrew.  http://www.pjoiner.demon.co.uk/genuki/DUR/AucklandStAndrew/index.html

If this is so, then there is a baptism here http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

Thomas Stockdale
Baptised  10 JUN 1838      Auckland Saint Andrew, Durham

Father: John Stockdale
Mother: Jane

Not sure if that helps.

Hi

There's an excellent place names index on the Durham County Record Office site which gives the Parishes.

http://www.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/usp.nsf/pws/Durham+Record+Office+-+Our+Holdings+-+Family+History

There's also Genuki:

Hi Pipj

Perhaps he isn't the right one  :(

Not sure if you have 1841 but this looks possible if it makes sense with your other census entries ... but the Jane daughter?

1841 - East Hetton? St Nicholas, Kelloe, Durham

John Stockdale 30 Coal Miner Y
Ann 25 Y
Thomas 3 Y
Jane 1 Y

Hi There

Cornforth came under the parish of Bishop Middeham..

East Hetton came under the parish of Kelloe...

From Cornforth either of these churches could be used... for the date you require..

No Stockdale baptisms in Kelloe or Bishop Middleham up to 1839.

Although Cornforth did not have a parish church until the 1860's the town itself is very old.

Cornforth is a tiny part of the village, the whole village is known as West Cornforth (the local name is 'Doggie')

Southchurch is an area on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland, about 10-12 miles away
