Post by: FH Course Tewks on Saturday 18 November 06 10:15 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for William Henry Bates, who was born in 1883 in
a large house in Leicestershire where his father was a gardener.  Can someone please look up the 1891 census please

Thank you.

Margaret

I was looking for William Henry Bates who was born I believe 21st June 1883 in Leicestershire.  My mother says his father was a gardener at the house in Leicestershire where Stilton Cheese was invented.

Thank you

Margaret

Margaret,
Iv'e found your Henry, born in Market Bosworth
7A 84, you'll have to "Google" to see if this is where Stilton was made.

Today, nearly 300 years later, Stilton is still made exclusively in the counties of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire from local milk.

The Centuries of Stilton™
Stilton was first made in the early 18th century in the midlands of England. Specifically in and around the Melton Mowbray area. Stilton takes its name from the village of Stilton (though no Stilton was ever made there) located about 80 miles north of London on the Great North Road. It is here that the coaches travelling from London to Scotland and other northern cities made their first stop for fresh horses and overnight stays. Convenient to Melton Mowbray and the surrounding area, the village became the centre market place for the cheese with thousands being sold every week. Thus the blue cheese one would buy in Stilton became known as Stilton cheese.

Hi Margaret

Perhaps this one?

1891 - Gordric (not easy to read the name) House Hungerton Leicestersire

Thomas Bates 42 Gardener b. Hungerton
Kate Bates 42 wife b. Courtesthorpe?
Edith 12 b. Hungerton
William H 7 b. ditto
Frederick 5 b. ditto
Emily G 8months? b. ditto

RG12
Piece: 2494
Folio 62
Page 7

They could be working at what seems to be a large house perhaps called The Grange headed by a William Johnston a Clerk at the Inland Revenue.  There are also other Bates families who are shepherds etc.

Regards
Biker

Hi again Margaret

These look good - you will need the father's name from the cert to confirm

Oh Biker beat me to it!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

p.s. there are lots of other BATEs families nearby, so would guess they are related!

There is quite a nice map here http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

Also the Melton Mowbray railway runs very close the the village of Hungerton.  Melton Mowbray is about 10 miles north of Hungarton which seems to fit with Berlin Bob's information and the cheese thing!

Thanks for all information.

Sounds that person I'm looking for.  Is it possible to go pack to previous censuses.

Thanks

Margaret.

You can search the 1881 census free here:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

Use the date of birth & place information that you have as a guide - it might vary a bit, as might spellings, but don;t be put off!

I will have a look too - I am using Edith's name as it is more unusual.

I would be inclined to check that you have the right family before doing too much, just to be certain.

You need to look at the marriage of Thomas and Kate next, to see where she is in 1871 you need her maiden name, probably.

Will see if Thomas is showing up.

Thanks again Arranroots - gosh you were busy yesterday!

You can guess what I am going through this evening!

I will forward all your info on to my student, hopefully she has signed up herself - but if not a little letter with her information might prompt her.

It did get quite confusing running around eight students but it was good fun

Thanks again

Quenby Hall is within walking distance of Hungerton - they are making Stilton Cheese - check out the web site  "quenbystilton.co.uk"  it is very interesting.

Thank you very much, this was a reply to one of my students on Saturdays course.  I will pass on the info and ask them to create their own user name and log in.

Cheers
