Hi,
I am seeking info., on Simon Peter Coleman, b St. Minver, Cornwall, England.
He is mentioned on a will, dated 1868 as being a hatter and furrier, in Toronto, Ontario, canada.
Are you able to find info on him, for me please ?
Thanks,
Junket.

Hi junket,
Hmmmmm.... so far the only reference I can find is to Coleman & Co., hatters and furriers, 55 King st. East, Toronto, in the 1871 Lovell's Province of Ontario Directory. Viewable here: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/canadiandirectories/022009-100.01-e.php (choose the right directory from the list, then do a search for coleman AND furrier)
There is not equivalent listing in the 1884 Ontario Gazateer and Directory (viewable at same place), so something has happened between those dates.
I am not having much luck on the 1881 census or the Ontario BMD records, but there are a few places I havenb't checked yet...

Hi junket,
Well, Coleman and Co, 55 King St. E. appears in the Toronto Directories from 1868 right up to 1881.
(Viewable here: http://digitalcollections.torontopubliclibrary.ca:8000/ - click on GO, then choose York and Toronto City Directories Pages)
The 1868 shows Coleman, S. P. as the proprieter. After that the entries just say Coleman and Co. However, starting in 1877 the proprieter is given as George W. Warner. Then in 1880 it is George Warner and John J. Wright. I can see George Warner in the 1881 census (viewable on familysearch), but not John Wright. And not Simon Coleman...
Interestingly, the nextdoor neighbour at 56 and 58 King St. was Silas Coleman and Sons - organ manufacturers. Silas died in 1870 - according to his death reg he was born in 1835 on the Isle of Wight. Any connection??
Off to look for a death reg for Simon Coleman...

Thank you MJP.,
I only found out about the Colman / Coleman ancestry a few days ago, my 4 x g grandmother was a Colman / Coleman. I am trying to sort the family out. I have names at present but no idea how they fit into the family. there was a hatter / furrier over here, in London, another Coleman.
A bit like a jigsaw puzzle at the moment, am trying to fit the pieces togrther. !!
Appreciate your help, thank you so much.

Hi junket,
I can't seem to find a death registration for Simon. Although, civil registration started in 1869, and in the early years the compliance rate was still quite low, so a lot of people got missed.
I also can't find any marriage registrations for Colemans with a father named Simon. Husband's names aren't usually listed on a woman's death registration, unless he was the informant, so I can't use that method either. It is strange that there is no other mention of him!
If you come across any more details, like perhaps his wife's name, or some children, let us know - maybe that will lead us somewhere...

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP, I DO APPRECIATE THE TIME AND EFFORT YOU HAVE MADE FOR ME.
THANKS

Found this old post today.
If you're still looking, Simon Peter Colman, hatter (and furrier) married Eleanor Clementina Clark Warner in Lambeth in 1847. They were in Canada in 1861 so must have had a business there as well. In 1867 they travelled from Liverpool to Boston , together with Eleanor's mother, also Eleanor (Warner). Simon Peter Coleman died in 1869. Eleanor re-married to Abraham Archer. George W Warner who later ran the Coleman business in Toronto was Eleanor's younger brother.

This is a link to the Cornwall Records Office where Simon is mentioned. He was born in Minver, Cornwall.

Thanks for that Sandra. Are Simon's parents definitely Francis Coleman and Jane 'Joan' Hodge?

I just popped in for a moment since I've not visited RootsChat lately. I have a Henry Sarge in my family. Sarge was not a common name in Toronto. It was a surprise to see a possible relative mentioned in this thread. :o :)
Off to work...

Simon P Coleman is buried in the Necropolis Cemetery, Toronto. Looks like the owner of the plot is a Warner.
