Hi all, I am looking for the parents of James Coleman born 1783 Uckfield (Brede) he was married to Elizabeth(?) born 1788 Icklesham and they are on the 1841 census and others with these children
Elizabeth 1826 Icklesham, Richard 1825 Icklesham,(who marries an Elizabeth) Hannah 1827 Icklesham and Philladelphia 1832. What I am interesed in finding is dates of marriages for these two men, father and son. And Also is it possible to go back further to James' father who was supposed to be John Coleman who married a Sarah Stone
in 1777 Sussex. They are supposed to link up with the Coleman family of Brede but so far I can't find that missing link.
Thanks to all who have helped me in the past, hoping you can do it again as my tree has grown so much since first discovering this site. Regards Gidget

Hi Gidget37,
John Coleman married Sarah Stone 18 Nov. 1777 in Brede Parish Church.
James Coleman married Elizabeth Marshall 12 May 1811 in Icklesham Church.
Hope this might help.

Thank you so much, I had a feeling it may have been Elizabeth Marshall when I saw her name with child Sarah the other day. Thanks for the Sarah Stone one as well.
Is there anyone can find children for the John Coleman and Sarah Stone marriage please?
Thanks again Gidget

Thanks for those kind words
we try to be as helpful as possible - why sit on info in your databases when someone else is scratching their heads to find it.
Good luck with future research

Hello again Chris, The Broad Oak are all mine thank you. Do you have a death for Charles Coleman born 1832 Beckley. He was at Plough Inn Westfield 1861 Census with his wife Elizabeth born 1829 Fletching, Cuckfield
on that one On the 1871 Census he was a journeyman miller, widowed with my gr grandmother Clara aged 6 yrs.So Elizabeth had died between 1865 and 1871. Then in 1881 Clara ( Clare H) aged 15 is at Stonelink Farm with Uncle William born 1829 Beckley and Aunt Frances Mary nee Noakes. So Charles had died between 1871 and 1881. The Family also had Chitcombe farm until after Carlos and Horace died when it was sold.
It has been a tricky family to sort out because every son had a son called William in just about every generation. Not to mention John and James and even Richard and Edward. Don't know if they were keen on Royalty or religious.
Any help you can give on death dates and places appreciated. Regards Gidget

Have you tried looking for wills? If they owned a farm they will probably have left wills and they can be very helpful in sorting out familes with the same names in each generation. Do you realise that all BMDs are free to search on ancestry? If they don't turn up on Chris' database then you can look for the post 1837 ones there. Do choose the complete version though, not the FreeBMD one which is not complete. Though it might be worth checking that to start with in case they have been transcribed already.

Hi Andrea, Good to hear from you.
I have a problem with Ancestry, the births are only 1837 on.Also when I try to look at some things it tells me to subscribe, it is so frustrating. I can only go so far with things on there. I am in Australia wether that makes a difference or not I'm not sure.
Regards Zoe.

Civil registration only started in 1837 so before that you have to look at individual parish registers. The dates you were talking about were after that though. Ignore the subscribe bit - you should be able to access it free. However, having said that, as they also have all the census records on, an annual subscription is amazing value for money - especially when you are trying to research from so far away. I would be lost without it. Early wills may be on the pro documentsonline site.

Hi Gidget37
I am new to all this and the information available seems amazing.
I have been researching my gr grandfather Horace Coleman born in Arlington in 1832. He was married to Lavinia (b1836 Dallington). I think that they had 11 children,William, Charles, Ebeznr, Mary, Horace A later listed as Alfred,Albert, George, David (my grandfather) Annie and Louie. I was wondering if there was a link with the work that you have been doing? I would be greatful for any tips. Annsec
-
Hi annsec,
Where is Arlington? I am in Australia :)
The Coleman's from Brede, Sussex had a son Horace who never married.
However other family members named their children Horace and Carlos.
Most stayed around East Sussex from what I can gather.
Our Horace was one of 13 children born to William and Hannah Coleman,
between 1796 1n3 1814. Horace was the youngest born 1814. He and his brother Carlos inherited the family home "Chitcome",Brede, Sussex and you can find them on the census.
I have not been very active on rootschat for awhile, but it is a wonderful site with so many great people who help you.
If we are connected please contact me again as I have quite a lot of info on Coleman family.
Regards gidget :D

Hi gidget,
Many thanks for your reply.
Arlington is about five miles north of Eastbourne in East Sussex. My Horace was born in 1832 and was listed on the census in 1881 as a farm labourer in Hellingly. In 1871 he was living in Hailsham but with no occupation listed. Both of these villages are in the same area of East Sussex as Arlington. Which Brede did your family come from? There are quite a few villages in East Sussex called Brede!

Hi annsec,
Brede near Broad Oak. They had a farm called Chitcombe Farm, and another called Stonelink. I believe those properties are still there.
The family built a church and a primary school. The church has been rebuilt and the school is still in use.
My gr grandmother was born at Westfield 1865 if that helps. Her parents had the Plough Inn, Westfield.
There were a lot of children names Horace and Carlos Coleman, I believe this might have happened because those brothers were both batchelors and maybe some relatives hoped they might be impressed to leave something to children named after them. There were no Horace or Carlos Colemans before these brothers. William is a family name, it seems almost every Coleman named his son William.
William and Hannah had 13 children, Ann married an Edmund Austen.
Maybe if you can get to a Census you might be able to work out the Brede they came from. My gr gr grandfather died and his daughter Clara Harriett went to live with her Uncle William and Aunt Frances Coleman at Stonelink, 1881 census. (it says her name is Clare H age 15, but it is her). She is with her father Charles b 1835, on the 1871 Census, he is a widower by then. He had a brother named William and their parents were William and Serina, also another brother named John. They are on the 1851 Census.
If you scroll down you will find an entry by Chris 1066, he lists the family buried at Broad Oak church.
Keep asking me questions if you need to.

Thanks again :) I'm sure there is a connection I just have to work out how it all fits together!
This is all in a relatively small area of Sussex (I still live there).
Horace b.1832 and Lavinia (born in a village called Dallington which is almost next to your Brede) named their eldest son William b.1858. I will see where he was in 1881, he had left home. He is my gr grandfathers brother.
Regards Annsec
-
Annsec, If you find your lot on 1881 then go back to 1871 cenus then 1851. Or go the other way. You should find Horace b 1832 as a young man with his parents and where they were born and their ages on 1851.
I have gone back to Richard Coleman and Mary Juv in late 1600's we might get a connection through one of their children
Keep looking :D

Thanks for that, I'll keep looking. Annsec

I am a collector of British Royal Commemorative beakers and I have one from 1897 (Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee) which has the following dedication on the reverse: "The Coleman Tribute Brede Jubilee 1897".
I was wondering if either of you were aware of who might have sponsored the dedication of this beaker or knew anything about the family involvement in any celebrations at that time.
With best wishes,
Michael.
-
Thank you gidget for your reply to my post about the beaker - I cannot work out how to attach an image - when I click on the option it does not offer the possibility. I cannot send Personal Messages until I have made three posts so am a bit limited and perhaps this 3 limit applies to the posts too.
You can see the beaker on my web site which is www.brcb.org.uk - if you just register - no charge ;) then you can search for the Town = Brede and there it is.
All the best,
Michael.
-
Thanks for that information Michael, I will follow through and have a look.
I have sent an email to my friend in Sussex who helps me find old family homes etc. Asking if he can unearth any information about the Jubilee.
If he comes up with anything, I will get back to you on here.

Me again Michael,
I just had a look, its a pretty one isn't it. I can't see the details to well though. The Coleman's were Yeoman farmers and hop growers, does that help you? It's an interesting family as far as I have gone in my research.
Regards Gidget.
By the way, when I registered your site said my name gidget37 was already registered.lol ;D

An interesting item but not linked to my Coleman family, they came from Arlington in Sussex
